Rebel teams sign up for 2008
Monday March 27 2006

The threat of a Formula One breakaway has receded after five rebel teams submitted their entries for the 2008 season.

The sport's governing body, the FIA, had set a deadline of March 31 for teams to confirm for 2008.

Four of the five teams threatening a split - who together form the Grand Prix Manufacturers' Association - signed up last night with the fifth confirming this morning.

The GPMA - Renault, BMW, Mercedes, Honda and Toyota - have called for a greater say in the running of the sport and a bigger share of its revenues.

A statement from the association said "significant progress" and been made in discussions with F1 rights holder Bernie Ecclestone.

It added: "The teams look forward to beginning discussions with the FIA in order to finalise the regulations for 2008.

"The GPMA members are united and remain committed to improve the sport for the benefit of all stakeholders."

Was announced yesterday but I think this is for the greater good of motor racing. We do not need a split like there is in North America, IMO.
