·Manchester United have reportedly failed in a last ditch bid to sign Lazio's Czech Republic star Pavel Nedved.
According to La Stampa, Sir Alex Ferguson's side returned to Lazio with a £30 million offer for the talented midfielder, after previous attempts to land the player failed.
The renewed approach, which would completely shatter United's transfer record, the £12.5 million they paid Aston Villa for Dwight Yorke, was still rebuffed, incredibly, by the Rome club's owner Sergio Cragnotti.
Nedved, who had revealed it would be a dream to play at Old Trafford but then insisted he was happy to stay in the Eternal City, performed well during Euro 2000 and is clearly one of the top midfielders in Europe.
A four-year contract was awaiting the 28-year-old in Manchester, according to the Italian press, but one of United's top targets looks like he will remain in Serie A.
As regards another superstar allegedly on Ferguson's wish-list, Portuguese ace Luis Figo, the Barcelona man has revealed a desire to play in England in the future, even though he seems certain either stay at Camp Nou, or go to Lazio, this summer.
"I like attacking football and I would love to play in English football," Figo told FourFourTwo magazine. "It is my favourite league. I like the way it is played, especially the atmosphere, and I love London as a city.
"I've got four years on my contract and I intend to stay at Barcelona," he admitted. "After that, in the future, I don't know."
His wife, Helena, would also love to move to the English capital, adding: "There's nowhere better in the world. Luis loves London and has been there many times. The climate is cold and grey, but I'm used to that as I'm Swedish!"
