Argentina fielded a very beatable team that only had 2 WC players in Higuain and Di Maria, and only their attack was better on paper, but according to Di Biagio that was an elite team that finished 2nd WC (and I guess Italy is supposed be New Zealand).

He seems to be one of the new Italian coaches who tries to copy Pep but doesn't know how and doesn't have the requisite resources. Hence, possession and chances and getting scored on via counterattacks.

But Di Biagio and these games don't matter. More concerning was Costacurta putting down the quality of the players (must be great confidence boost for them esp when Arg & Eng lineups didn't look anything special) and already readying excuses.

You make the crucial point. It is not the talent which is lacking, it is the right development between the ages of 19 and 21; those 2 or 3 years are critical.

Of course, the best young Italian talents need to be at clubs playing in the CL and EL to really hope the become the type of players who enable us to be regularly competitive in the later stages of competitions.

I think the newer generation of Italian coaches understand this; maybe Allegri is the last of the older ones who prefer experience over talent, however unjustifiable it is.
Talent is defo lacking, and to change that, you need more federal centers, more/better coaches, and a diff approach, all targeting the youth (pretty much what Germany did).

Rugani could get more playing time, but there are more Sturaros than Ruganis.
