Former Israel star placed under house-arrest

Sunday 26th May 2002

Maccabi Yavne's coach Eli Cohen has been placed under house arrest for five days, after being released from police custody on Sunday morning.

"The fact that the police didn't request to have Cohen's remand extended proves that my client is innocent," claimed Cohen's lawyer Ari Shamai.

Cohen a former Hapoel Tel Aviv player who made 11 international appearances for Israel between 1986-89, was detained six days ago by the international serious crimes unit for alleged involvement in illegal gambling and match fixing.

Referee Yochanan Chibotero has also been placed under house arrest, and the police have declined his request to give state evidence.

A senior police officer also revealed that the scandal is far from finished, with another referee who has officiated top-flight football expected to be questioned in the next 48 hours.
