Joe, I'm deeply disapointed in Hungary's loss to Slovenia -- its major downer. Joe, I'm sort of a betting man (actually in other sports). I would have put rock hard money on Hungary at home. I had that much faith in Varhidi ... I know he was down four key starters to injuries and other circumstances but Varhidi insisted on an sphinx incomprehendable defensive alignment 4-5-1 against for Pete's sake Slovenia! A truly Western coach would have put more on the line, and it shows average and not proper discernment by Varhidi.
Slovenia should have have been shown more trump ace cards on attack, more of a militarist offensive-oriented 4 defenders, 3 midfielders and 2 forwards. Varhidi held back, and had a sole player at point - Priskin - and played defense all across the board. Hungary should have realized the bookmakers' respect and beat Slovenia 2-1, 3-0, 2-0 or 1-0.
Italians religiously play bunker-safety-first football ... but against Slovenia! Varhidi's boys showed a lack of character and moxie, I'm almost wanting an ol wily Englishman to coach the Hungarian national varsity. I hope you can agree with this Joe that the 1st rule in American sports is when you're out of talent and fuel is low -you start pushing offensive buttons by put more forward emphasis on the line.
Bill Parcells and Bobby Knight - they'll tell you the same thing:
Power wins football games not neccessarily speed, pace, skill and craftiness (although they are supplementary adjectives and they help 30%) ... Varhidi simply doesn't know that power wins football games. Varhidi put one lone forward, the mercurial Priskin in a 4-5-1 formation. I eulogized for a strong 4-3-3 forward attacking tactical alingment. That would have eked out a victory against Slovenia. We don't have an eternity to toy around with Hungary's mediocrity, I want an good old English football master-instructor to tutor Hungary.
