Even without star player Athirson, Flamengo beat Vasco 2 x 1 to win this year's Carioca Championship. Vasco, who needed a three-goal win to take the game to penalties, took the lead first in the 42nd minute of the first half, Viola (standing in for the suspended Edmundo) beating off the Fla defence to whip the ball past Clemer. Only minutes later, both Felipe and Maurinho received their second yellow cards for fighting and both took an early shower, leaving each team with ten men on the field.
Early in the second half Flamengo got their equaliser, a beautiful pass from Mozart finding Reinaldo in the area to slam the ball into the net. And only minutes later Vasco's dream was effectively over, as Juan headed the ball over Hélton for Tuta to pick up and knock into the goal. Vasco, without Edmundo and Romário, are in a bad phase at the moment and need a new coach to provide some stability in the team. Losing Edmundo was bad enough at this crucial stage, but not having Romário either was possibly disastrous. The striker, who has now officially been crowned the highest goalscorer in the Carioca Championship for the seventh time, beating the record previously held by Zico, was declared unfit shortly before the game.
Flamengo won the championship last year and this is their 26th in total, making them the team with the most titles. They will now go on to dispute the Champions Cup and are still in the semi-finals of the Copa do Brasil.
