Serie A Preview: Fiorentina-Parma

Time to deliver in Serie A...Nakata (Allsport)
04/26/2002. BACKGROUND
Pride. The only thing Fiorentina have left to play for. Their relegation to Serie B was sealed a couple of weeks ago but surely the players and fans realised over two months earlier that their future was a bleak one. One win in 18 games is the bare naked truth of why the Viola have been relegated. Defensively they have been inept for much of the season, the midfield have been devoid of creativity and the attack -Adriano excluded- has lacked punch. The club's board must now plan for a brighter future. It won't be easy. The club are still in huge debt and many of the current playing staff are unlikely to be around next season. Continuity is unlikely to be the buzzword around the Artemio Franchi for some time to come.
On Thursday, Parma were somewhat unlucky to be beaten 2-1by Juventus in the Coppa Italia final first-leg. They dominated the last 30 minutes and got their just deserts when Hidetoshi Nakata superbly volleyed home. Prior to that goal Marco Marchionni had missed a couple of very good chances while Emiliano Bonazzoli and Nakata had both come close. The Gialloblu now have every chance of turning it round in the second-leg at the Tardini.
For now, though, it is back to the harsh reality of a Serie A relegation battle. Parma have always threatened to move away from the drop zone without ever managing to quite string enough results together in order to achieve this. They sit just one point above the bottom four but will be confident of securing the necessary points to stay up as their final two matches are against the two poorest teams in the league- Fiorentina and Venezia.
FORMGUIDE
Fiorentina Last Six Matches: DLLLLL
The only point came at home to Bologna where a goal from Argentine midfielder Ezequiel Gonzalez earned the Viola a 1-1 draw. Since then they have been beaten by Torino (1-0), Inter (1-0), Piacenza (3-0), Lazio (1-0) and Brescia (3-0).
Parma Last Six Matches: WLWLDL
League wins at home to Juventus and Udinese have meant that the Gialloblu have been able to keep their head above water. Elsewhere, they've been comfortably beaten by Milan (3-1) and Roma (3-1) but last weekend Johan Micoud notched a vital last-minute equaliser against Atalanta to secure a 1-1 draw. Against Juve on Thursday, they impressed but came away with a 2-1 defeat.

PLAYERS TO WATCH
Ezequiel Gonzalez (Fiorentina)- the Argentine will be forced to play in an unfamiliar striking role in this match, but he has shown enough since his move from Rosario Central to suggest that he could be a real threat to a depleted Parma defence. One remembers the Viola's clash with Juventus some weeks ago where he ran the Bianconeri back-line ragged at times.
Hidetoshi Nakata (Parma)- after his impressive showing against Juve, the Japanese international will surely be brimming with confidence. He has performed below all expectations since his big-money move from Roma, but now could finally be the time for him to deliver.
