Fiorentina – Parma

Stadio Franchi

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Viola fans increase their protests against the club with each passing week and this, their last home game of the season, should see another strong statement.

Once again a host of top stars are out of action as Nuno Gomes, Domenico Morfeo, Adriano and Paolo Vanoli watch from the stands of the Artemio Franchi Stadium.

Parma must gear up to take advantage of the psychologically frail side if they are to avoid slipping into Serie B along with them.

However, the Gialloblu also have problems as the midweek Coppa Italia Final first leg at Juventus could prove a costly distraction. Fabio Cannavaro is suspended, while Marco Di Vaio is struggling with a deep cut to his left heel. Nestor Sensini and Mathias Almeyda are also in doubt.

Serie A Preview: Fiorentina-Parma
Fiorentina - Parma | News Archive

Time to deliver in Serie A...Nakata (Allsport)
04/26/2002. BACKGROUND

Pride. The only thing Fiorentina have left to play for. Their relegation to Serie B was sealed a couple of weeks ago but surely the players and fans realised over two months earlier that their future was a bleak one. One win in 18 games is the bare naked truth of why the Viola have been relegated. Defensively they have been inept for much of the season, the midfield have been devoid of creativity and the attack -Adriano excluded- has lacked punch. The club's board must now plan for a brighter future. It won't be easy. The club are still in huge debt and many of the current playing staff are unlikely to be around next season. Continuity is unlikely to be the buzzword around the Artemio Franchi for some time to come.

On Thursday, Parma were somewhat unlucky to be beaten 2-1by Juventus in the Coppa Italia final first-leg. They dominated the last 30 minutes and got their just deserts when Hidetoshi Nakata superbly volleyed home. Prior to that goal Marco Marchionni had missed a couple of very good chances while Emiliano Bonazzoli and Nakata had both come close. The Gialloblu now have every chance of turning it round in the second-leg at the Tardini.

For now, though, it is back to the harsh reality of a Serie A relegation battle. Parma have always threatened to move away from the drop zone without ever managing to quite string enough results together in order to achieve this. They sit just one point above the bottom four but will be confident of securing the necessary points to stay up as their final two matches are against the two poorest teams in the league- Fiorentina and Venezia.

FORMGUIDE

Fiorentina Last Six Matches: DLLLLL

The only point came at home to Bologna where a goal from Argentine midfielder Ezequiel Gonzalez earned the Viola a 1-1 draw. Since then they have been beaten by Torino (1-0), Inter (1-0), Piacenza (3-0), Lazio (1-0) and Brescia (3-0).

Parma Last Six Matches: WLWLDL

League wins at home to Juventus and Udinese have meant that the Gialloblu have been able to keep their head above water. Elsewhere, they've been comfortably beaten by Milan (3-1) and Roma (3-1) but last weekend Johan Micoud notched a vital last-minute equaliser against Atalanta to secure a 1-1 draw. Against Juve on Thursday, they impressed but came away with a 2-1 defeat.

LATEST TEAM NEWS

Fiorentina- star attacking trio Adriano, Nuno Gomes and Domenico Morfeo will all have to watch the game from the stand. Enrico Chiesa remains a long-term absentee, while Paolo Vanoli, Riccardo Taddei, Marco Franceschetti and Brazilian Amaral are all out. Predrag Mijatovic will again start in what could be one of his final games for the club.

PL- 4-4-2- Taglialatela, Torricelli, Adani, Pierini, Agostini, Rossitto, Cois, Amoroso, Di Livio, Mijatovic, Gonzalez

Parma- Nestor Sensini and Mathias Almeyda are doubts after missing the Coppa Italia final first-leg, while Marco Di Vaio is also uncertain to play with a heal injury. Fabio Cannavaro is again suspended after getting booked last weekend against Atalanta. Hidetoshi Nakata is likely to come in after his impressive substitute appearance against Juve.

PL- 3-5-2- Frey, Ferrari, Boghossian, Benarrivo, Diana, Appiah, Lamouchi, Nakata, Junior, Di Vaio, Sukur

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Ezequiel Gonzalez (Fiorentina)- the Argentine will be forced to play in an unfamiliar striking role in this match, but he has shown enough since his move from Rosario Central to suggest that he could be a real threat to a depleted Parma defence. One remembers the Viola's clash with Juventus some weeks ago where he ran the Bianconeri back-line ragged at times.

Hidetoshi Nakata (Parma)- after his impressive showing against Juve, the Japanese international will surely be brimming with confidence. He has performed below all expectations since his big-money move from Roma, but now could finally be the time for him to deliver.

Too bad, we should have lost 6-0 or something instead, we don't even deserve to score that goal!

Are we in the last position yet? Or are Venezia still there? I hope Venezia gets a better position than we do!

It was an unfortunate loss, especially for having a lead for nearly 80minutes of the match.

I hope fiorentina win promotion next year and built a team from the roots that can play free flowing attacking football, like we witnessed in florence in the past few years.

Fiorentina 1 - 2 Parma
Adriano 4 Di Vaio 80, 91

Fiorentina wave goodbye to Serie A with their last home game of the season, but Parma were desperate to avoid a similar fate.
Marco Di Vaio was forced to wear a specially modified shoe in order to play despite a painful heel injury.

However, it was the Viola who broke the deadlock with a splendid Adriano solo effort. The Brazilian dribbled round several players before sliding a low drive past Sebastien Frey.

There was controversy when Predrag Mijatovic clashed with Luigi Sartor just inside the box, but the referee waved play on.

Parma poured forward in search of an equaliser and a fierce Sabri Laomouchi effort slammed onto the woodwork. However, teenage goalkeeper Cassano held out under the siege against shots from Hakan Sukur, Di Vaio and Hidetoshi Nakata.

The Gialloblu eventually snatched a goal late on. Poor defending left Di Vaio completely unmarked to tap in from close range. Deep into stoppage time the striker gave them all three points with a fine volley.
