Italian giants Internazionale are leading the chase to sign Mika Vayrynen and Petri Pasanen from Finnish club Lahti.

The pair have attracted interest from a number of European clubs after some impressive and mature performances in the Finnish league this season.

Inter representatives have watched both players in three league matches, and have held transfer talks with Lahti officials.

FC Lahti’s sports director Sami Vehkakoski told STT: "We’ve had discussions with them. Initially, it would mean the lads could get a chance to train with Inter in the autumn."

Before that both players will travel to Ajax, who are also interested in the pair, to train with the squad there. The Dutch giants have profited from scouting Finland before, when they signed Jari Litmannen, the most successful Finnish player ever, a few years ago.

Dutch rivals Heerenveen also have their fingers in the pie as they are reported to have put a firm offer on the table for 19-year-old defender Pasanen, who has just started his military service.

Midfielder Vayrynen, 18, was voted the "Most Promising Player of 1998" in Finland.

Lahti meanwhile have announced they have signed a one-year extension to keeper Istvan Hamori’s contract. The 32-year-old Hungarian has been impressive this season and will now remain at Lahti until the end of the 2001 season.
