Figo lifts lid on move to 'bigger' Real
If we lift the cup in glasgow, it will send chills down the spine of all barca fans, to witness Figo lifting the cup in the whites of Real!
Wednesday 8th May 2002
Real Madrid midfielder Luis Figo has finally broken his silence on the reasons behind his move from Barcelona, claiming that Real are simply a bigger club who treat him better.
Figo joined Real from their arch-rivals in a £42 million deal in summer 2000, but he had always remained coy about the reasons behind the move. On Wednesday though, he launched an astonishing attack on his former club, apparently blaming president Joan Gaspart for his departure.
"Why did I leave Barcelona?" he asked "Maybe you should ask Gaspart. I must outline that I joined Real because it is more prestigious, treats me better gives me more money and gives me the chance to play is such games as the Champions' League final.
"Real Madrid are used to playing in that kind of game, and it's easier to reach the final if you play for Real.
"These past two seasons have been great for me both privately and in a professional sense as well. I am now a happy person, because I have won a lot of titles, and Real have given me the chance of winning a title I haven't yet won - the Champions' League."
Real face Bayer Leverkusen in the final next Wednesday, and Figo admitted that victory would be the pinnacle of his club career so far.
"Even reaching the final is prestigious for me, and a reason to be happy already."
Figo, though, is far from certain to start the final, after suffering an ankle injury.
"I am not a fortune-teller, but I just hope pain won't appear again in Glasgow," he said. "That's all I ask for."
