Luis Figo, the man classed as Rivaldo’s equal in the Barcelona team, looks set for a sensational summer move to Premiership champions Manchester United.
According to reports, United will be offered the chance to buy the 27-year-old winger for £8 million next week on the insistance of the Portuguese international who has stressed his desire to move only to Old Trafford.

Figo insisted on a get-out clause with Barcelona when he extended his current contract until 2004.

Although AC Milan, Lazio and Inter Milan have all been chasing him in recent weeks, the Daily Mail states that Figo has told his agent that United are the team for him.

Figo’s estimated wage of £55,000 a week at the Nou Camp will test the Old Trafford board, who last season grudgingly agreed to pay Roy Keane £52,000 a week.

However, the prospect of pairing Figo with David Beckham and allowing the England man to partner Keane in midfield would be a tantalising prospect for Sir Alex Ferguson.

The Manchester United boss is reluctant to change the balance of his side, stating that Beckham will not be moved into a central role until a suitable replacement can be found. But, in the Portuguese international they have a more than capable deputy for the United star.

Figo is revered in Spain and in his native Portugal, and is a genuine star of the world game. His signature would once more demonstrate the insatiable appetite for success at United and provide a statement of intent to the rest of Europe and the Premiership.
