Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is going to make Uruguayan wonder kid Nery Castillo his next signing in a shock deal.

Fergie is in talks with Castillo's club Danubio of Montevideo about a surprise £1.5 million (€2.4m) swoop for the 16 year-old sensation.

Striker Castillo has already been to Manchester on a 16,000-mile round trip for a look round Old Trafford and he played in a secret youth game where he dazzled Fergie and his staff.

However United initially backed off when they were quoted £3 million for the starlet who is also being stalked by all of the top Italian sides.

But Ferguson has put agency L'Attitude - headed by Simply Red's Mick Hucknall and employing his son Jason - on the case and they have agreed to do the deal for United at a sensible price.

Castillo is a regular in the Uruguayan youth side and plays for the first team occasionally in the tough domestic league.

If United tie up the deal this week Castillo would go into the first-team squad although he could only expect to play in the reserves next season.

However experts in Uruguay say that United could have beaten the world to a top talent if they can clinch the shock transfer.

Castillo - as his name suggests - has a Spanish passport and would not need to apply for a work permit.

United are worried that they have no young strikers coming through the ranks. Any older ones they go for cost millions.

So if Castillo makes the big-time in the next couple of seasons they will have signed a gem at a cheap price.

Danubio are famous for producing world-class talent such as Alvaro Recoba of Inter Milan, currently rated at £15m (€24m).
