Le Roy names 20-man squad

Claude Le Roy has named his squad for next month’s international friendly which will see Ghana take on West African rivals, Nigeria.

The game which comes up on February 6 is the first match of the year for Ghana and it would be played at the Griffin park in Brentford.

Uncapped Ghana internationals, Quincy Owusu-Abeyie and Ibrahim Salou have been handed call ups to the Black Stars.

Strikers Isaac Boakye and Joe Tex Frimpong have been also been included in the team.

Injury ruled out Boakye from Ghana’s squad for last year's World Cup finals in Germany while Frimpong makes a come back after almost a year since the 2006 CAN.

The friendly with the Super Eagles forms part of Ghana’s build up towards the African Cup of Nations next year.

Ghana, by virtue of being host of the 2008 African Cup of Nations finals would not be playing any competitive match until January 2008, when the tournament kicks off in Accra.

The game with Nigeria would be the first match against an African opposition for Claude Le Roy who goes into his fourth game as Ghana coach.

Le Roy guided the Black Stars to their double Asian conquest where Ghana beat Japan and South Korea in separate international friendlies in October last year.

The coach drew in his third match in charge against Australia later in November.

Ghana undefeated in four international matches since her round of 16 exit at last year’s World Cup would be making a second appearance in Brentford after playing Senegal at the same venue last year.

Ghana squad:

Goalkeepers: Sammy Adjei (Mohadon Sports Ashdod, Israel), Richard Kingson (BB Ankaraspor, Turkey)

Defenders: Hans Adu Sarpei (VFL Wolfsburg, Germany), John Paintsil (West Ham, England), Francis Dickoh (FC Utrecht, Holland), Habib Mohammed (Molde FK, Norway), Shilla Illiasu (Saturn FC, Russia) and John Mensah (Rennes, France)

Midfielders: Stephen Appiah (Fenerbache, Turkey), Michael Essien (Chelsea, England), Laryea Kingson (Hearts, Scotland) Sulley Ali Muntari (Udinese, Italy), Haminu Draman (Genclerbirligi, Turkey), Eric Addo (PSV Eindhoven, Holland)

Forwards: Junior Agogo (Nottingham Forest, England D3), Joe Tex Frimpong (CS Sfaxien, Tunisia) Asamoah Gyan (Locomitiv Moscow, Russia) Ibrahim Salou (Club Brugge, Holland) Quincy Owusu Abeyie (Spartak Moscow, Russia) and Isaac Boakye (VFL Wolfsburg, Germany)

Cape Verde overhaul squad

Cape Verde coach Ricardo Rocha has made major changes to his squad for the friendly against Italy's under-21 side in Cesena on Tuesday.

For his first game in charge, the Brazilian has dropped five key players while naming three new faces in his 18-man squad.

The most prominent player dropped by Rocha is Cafu, who plays for German side Freiburg.

Cafu has been an instrumental figure in Cape Verde's recent resurgence as force in African football.

Sandro, Janicio and Ernesto are the other key players who were left out of the squad.

Portugal-based striker Dady is also left despite being in good form for his club Belenenses.

An interesting inclusion among the four newcomers is Zico Veiga, who plays college football in the United States.

But Zico is not entirely unknown in Cape Verde because he played for the country's under-21 side at the 2006 Lusophone Games in Macao.

Another surprise inclusion is goalkeeper Jalison Moreira alias Cadabra, who was born in Luxembourg.

Babanca of Sporting Praia and Romy of Academica Mindelo are included for their first caps.

Cape Verde will play Algeria next month in a Group Eight Nations Cup qualifier.

Squad

Goalkeepers: Raul de Pina (Uniao Micaelense, Portugal D2), Cadabra (FC Etzella, Luxemburg)

Defenders: Nelson Veiga (Omonia Nicosia, Cyprus), Loloti (Sporting Clube Praia), Pelé (Southampton, England D2), Zé Piguita (Al Shamal, Qatar), Nando (US Monastir, Tunisia)

Midfielders: Lito (Naval Primeiro Maio, Portugal), Emerson (Beira-Mar, Portugal), Néné (Desportivo Aves, Portugal) Victor Moreno (Vitoria Guimaraes, Portugal D2), Marco Soares (Olhanense, Portugal D2), Babanco (Sporting Clube Praia)

Strikers: Rodolfo Lima (Portimonense, Portugal D2), Hernani (Desportivo das Aves, Portugal), Calo (Al Shamal, Qatar), Romy (Academica Mindelo), Zico (United States)

Man, truly pathetic by Nigeria. Now with Vogts coming in I can't see improvement, since Vogts is not the guy to lead Nigeria out of this mess. Incredible to see how Nigeria, a few years ago the strongest team of Africa, is now overtaken by countries like IC and Ghana, who continue their good play of the World Cup. Simply because Nigerian football has been ****ed around with for too long, we slump from one defeat into another.
