Popescu is a sweeper,not a marker...so you'll see Bulent or Emre vs. Anderson...
the same things can be said for Ogun...

You know last 20 years a lot of team especially the big
guns left the man marking defensive structure in the world.
But they found the tandem system in early 90's(MILAN-BARESI,COSTACURTA/BRAZIL-M.SANTOS,ALDAIR).At this system,
tandem defender protects his area and marker of a striker
if the man goes into his area.So OGUN,POPESCU ETC. who is
playing at the heart of the defence he must be a natural
marker.He defends his area,he defends his man(changeable at
the match).At the other hand you are right one of the
tandem defender is always be a marker and most of the coaches of our time don't take a risk and give this man on to most dangerous striker of the rival team(ALPAY,BULENT etc.).I think you are understanding me well and thank for your post.

i understand what you mean Emrah,
now i'm talking for galatasaray...Lucescu said the team will play with 3-5-2 formation.It means there will be 3 central defenders,1 sweeper and 2 marker...the sweeper will be popescu and he'll never make marking.even if he wants he can't...he's good at positioning and reading the game but he can't mark anybody..it's his playing style...surely during the match he'll come face to face with opponents but other two central defenders will mark opponent strikers...

Dear Kadri,I know his mission at the field but I think LUCESCU can use him like a marker because he is very good at this point,I watched him as a marker at BARCA several times with ABELARDO,NADAL or BLANC.He is a world class one.
I like one on one like NBA because it's the real fight at the sportive world.

maybe...but he's older and much slower now,

as i know Barca sell him because he's not suitable for tandem system,he's not good at one on one...Fatih Terim also knew the fact and put him behind Capone or Bulent...i remember he said "i know popescu is not good at one to one but he has some other skills make him an indispensible member of the team"

it's Lucescu's job to find his best position,we'll see whether he'll do well or not...

He's unbeatable at the last 25 mt. of the field.But the one true thing is the age of POPA may be old for this job.
Barca sold him because VAN GAAL wanted his man "R.DE BOER" for his place and the other AJAX BROTHER(BOGARDE) for the other place.
