Last year, when we screwed things up, nobody would get off our backs. Since doing the double we’d underachieved badly, we always came second and the team was about to collapse. We didn’t defend ourselves – even the players agreed.

This time, the other clubs have taken a different line – a variety of excuses and reasons why they should have won/will win next season!

Man United: We Let You Win
“If Man U hadn’t dropped all those points earlier in the season we’d be champions. We lost it, you didn’t win it, we blew it with few defensive blunders. We are the best really.”
The belief behind this excuse is that the Premiership trophy’s “rightful home” is at the Theatre of Prawns (Scousers seem to believe the same of Anfield.) If it goes anywhere else, this is an aberration caused by luck, defensive blunders, the price of prawn sandwiches or Juan Veron. :)

Leeds/Liverpool/Chelsea: the Good Young Team.
“We have a good young team and we are building for the future.”
The king of this excuse is obviously David O’Leary but Liverpool are starting to use it a lot and Chelsea used it after the FA Cup final.
Real teams like Man U and Arsenal actually win trophies; Good Young Teams win imaginary “future trophies.” The Leeds and Liverpool trophy cabinets are both overflowing with “next year” Premiership trophies. :D

Spurs: Delusional Nonsense
Glenda Hoddle: We’ll be challenging for the Premiership within three years, TV money will go down and this will help us bridge the gap with the top teams. Today the Worthless Cup, tomorrow the world! (oh, actually, we lost, bugger :()

Newcastle: Complete Pessimism
“We’ll try our hearts out and shout how great the team are but deep down we are all utterly convinced that we’ll win sweet FA.”

How nice that we won’t have to trot out weak excuses like the rest of ‘em this season. :)

Actually, no, just thought I'd have a go at all the other teams. :D That's not martyrdom. :)
