ERIKSSON OPENS 2004 DOOR FOR LEEDS DUO

Saturday April 27 2002

Sven-Goran Eriksson has revealed he intends to pick Leeds duo Lee Bowyer and Jonathan Woodgate for England - but only after the World Cup.

Eriksson has already disclosed Woodgate will be picked when his international selection ban comes to an end this summer after his conviction for affray.

Now he has confirmed that although Bowyer is almost certain to miss out on the World Cup as well, he is also at the heart of his plans for the 2004 European Championships.

The Leeds midfielder is technically available for selection after being cleared of assault and affray but Eriksson evidently believes that he has endured too many distractions this season to pick him just yet.

The England coach, who has not previously gone into any detail over his reasoning behind Bowyer's omission from recent squads, revealed: "He has had a difficult season for many reasons. I am the first one to understand that.

"He is a very good football player and if he's not going to be picked for the World Cup, then after the World Cup he will be picked.

"Both he and Jonathan Woodgate have had a difficult year or two.

"We have a lot of good midfielders in this country so the competition is very hard. But at some stage, I am going to pick both of them, very soon after the World Cup."

Well it was obvious that they weren't going to the world cup Pat, I'm not sure why you are getting all bent out of shape. At least they'll feature in Euro 2004, which will be a tournament that England will be favourites for because all the young players England has now will have matured a bit more with a WC under their belt, so they'll play better.
Yeah, he says they will feature in 2004 but I would put money on it that he's only saying that to shut us Leeds fan's up. I bet he wont put them in. He is stupid for not putting them in, they are bloody good...
By the time Portugal 2004 roles around then Woodgate and Bowyer's charges will have been forgotten. If they are still playing well than they will make it into the team.
My opinion is that, most of the people assumed that this was the case and there are alot of people who thought that they were good enough to go, however, because of all the trial etc. Sven was just trying to keep the peace.. and to be honest, they would be somewhat of an easy target to get wound up by opposition, whether it be fans or players.

However, i think that Sven is pretty foolish to state that they will definitely be in the squad after the world cup - this is stirring up emotions that was really, unneccesary, especially to state it before the wc has even started. Why he just did wait until selection time in 2 years - or even half way through next season when he can see them back to their best (although Bow isnt' far off) and then state that they are playing excellent and will be included in the 2004 Euros is beyond me..

It was all dying down about their lack of selection and so to raise the topic again for no apparent reason is just plain stupid..

well - you asked!!:)
Yeah, he was a bit wrong for gauranteeing them a spot in the team after the WC. He didn't say it would be the Portugal 2004 tour team. He just said after the WC, friendleys. I think it is wrong becasuse if they arenot in the team I'm 110% sure that Leeds fan's wont take that and will retaliate...
