Birmingham v West Brom
St Andrews
Saturday, 18 December
Kick-off: 1200 GMT

Mario Melchiot should recover from a thigh strain in time to line up in
Birmingham's defence.

Robbie Savage has shrugged off a bout of sickness and Darren Carter will
hold on to his place after impressing against Aston Villa.

West Brom will be without defender Darren Moore and midfielder Cosmin Contra
because of knee and groin injuries respectively.

Jason Koumas will replace Contra for his first start under Bryan Robson.

Birmingham (from): Maik Taylor, Melchiot, Tebily, Cunningham, Upson,
Lazaridis, Clapham, Gray, Johnson, Carter, Savage, Dunn, Anderton, Morrison,
Heskey, Vaesen, Yorke, Clemence, Martin Taylor.

West Brom (from): Hoult, Scimeca, Purse, Clement, Johnson, Greening, Gera,
Earnshaw, Kanu, Hulse, Horsfield, Koumas, Gaardsoe, Albrechtsen, Robinson,
Dyer, Sakiri, Kuszczak, Moore, Contra.

BIG-MATCH FACTS

a.. BIRMINGHAM CITY are hoping to wrap up a derby double by way of a
Christmas present to their fans. Last Sunday manager Steve Bruce celebrated
three years in charge with a 1-2 away victory over their nearest, and not so
dearest neighbours Aston Villa - now beleaguered West Brom make the trip to
St Andrews for a high noon Saturday showdown. But the Brummies have not
recorded back-to-back victories in the Premiership since early March.

a.. Blues are seeking their first home win since August and only their
second League maximum at St Andrews this season. They own the Premiership's
bluntest attack (14 goals), scoring just one in the last four top flight
matches in front of their own fans. It can also be argued, they're the least
entertaining Premiership club, as 17 matches have produced just 33 goals (14
for, 19 against) - the lowest aggregate in the top division.

a.. The Brummies took all three points on the only previous occasion these
two have met in the Premiership at St Andrews, but it took a 94th minute
header from Geoff Horsfield.

a.. WEST BROMWICH ALBION know that failure to win here will mean Premiership
history will have to be made if they're to survive at the highest level.
Only two amazing results, like a clear four goal victory for the Baggies,
and a four goal defeat for Southampton at Tottenham, will prevent West Brom
from going into Christmas in bottom place from where a club has never
escaped relegation in the Premiership era.

a.. Albion have drawn one and lost five under Bryan Robson. They've lost the
last three on the bounce and not won in nine, since the 2-1 triumph over
Bolton at the Hawthorns on 2 October - their only maximum this term. The
Baggies have not lost four League games on the spin since tumbling to seven
successive defeats between mid February and mid April 2003, in their
previous Premiership excursion.

a.. Albion's only win in six League visits to St Andrews was 0-1 in the
Nationwide First Division on 7 November 2001.

Referee:
Mike Riley (Leeds)
Mike Riley has averaged 3.64 cards per game in the 11 Premiership matches
he's controlled so far. Only Phil Crossley and Matt Messias have issued
cards more frequently on average in top flight contests. Darren Purse of
West Brom is one of the four players Riley has dismissed. Purse was sent off
for a second bookable offence at Newcastle in September.

Dont have a good feeling about this, (not that I ever do these days :( )

Cant see us getting anything out of this fixture, 2-1 to Blues.

Our defence is too porous to keep the score down to 1 or even more rare the clean sheet.

As usual Gera and Earnie will be our main goal threats.

I think Contra is still injured (big loss! :(), and so is Big Dave (Darren Moore).
Come on Robbo, start with the Danes at CB its the ONLY combo we haven't tried yet.
Hell they CANNOT do any worse than Purse who was woeful again agaisnt Charlton, losing players far too often.

I think new defence, maybe all 4 players :)

Darren Purse is not good enough at CB and Only really Darren Moore shows the right commitment. But the trouble is all the players are Megsons players and Robson needs chance to bring in players he wants, and can play his system. Its blatantly obvious to us all now that the ones we have now just cant hack it.

We create quite a bit goign forward, but our defending is rubbish. We have two Danish players Martin Albrechtsen(our record signing at £2.7m) who has only played a handful of games for us, dont know why; and Tomas Gaardsoe, who also hasn't been playing, and was player of the season last season. When he does play(as in yesterday) he (BR) sticks him in centre mid! :rollani:

TBH I think something like this might work for us

Code:
              Kanu Earnie
                 Gera
     Greening <def mid> Contra/Koumas
Clement <new CB> <New CB> Contra/<new RB>
so 2 new CB's and a def mid come Jan.

From Teamtalk

Jonathan Greening has rebuked West Brom fans for directing their
frustrations at manager Bryan Robson during Saturday's 4-0 defeat at
Birmingham.

On this weekend's evidence, Albion look doomed to the drop and there
were signs at St Andrews that their fans are already losing faith in
Robson after just six games in charge.

Robson admitted he was hurt by cries of 'you don't know what you're
doing' and 'there's only one Gary Megson'.

But midfielder Greening, one of the few Baggies players to emerge
with much credit, said: "The abuse towards the manager was unfair.

"He needs time to bring his methods in and the players he wants in.
He's inherited a squad and he might not want a few of us players.

"He needs time to get people in whom he wants to play his style of
football. I think the fans have got to be patient in that respect
because it's not the manager's fault, it's the players' fault in not
performing for him."

Albion defender Riccardo Scimeca said: "We know we've let ourselves
down big time.

"We haven't performed at all in our last two games and we need to
sit down and look at ourselves.

"I think we need to have a few words among ourselves and get it
sorted. We need something from somewhere."
