It probably doesn't surprise many of us but an English supporter was sentenced to a year in prison on Friday for assaulting police officers during the riots in Brussels last Friday.

Mark Forrester, 34, was the first English fan to be charged following last week's disturbances and pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Forrester's lawyers have said they will appeal the decision arguing that he was not even at the scene in question.

"He received 12 months in prison, suspended for six months," prosecutor's office spokesman Joseph Colpin confirmed on Friday evening.

"The case is under appeal, but if the sentence is confirmed, he would normally expect to be freed after about two months as long as he behaved himself."

Belgian authorities have been using a fast track programme to bring cases to court quickly as part their hard-line against football hooliganism. Another English supporter was tried on Wednesday for causing a disturbance, but he was acquitted by a court in Charleroi.
