Queensland Reds and Wallaby centre Elton Flatley has announced he is retiring from rugby effective immediately due to ongoing problems with blurred vision.

The utility back, who has been in good form for the Reds this season, has received medical advice about his ongoing problems with blurred vision and for the good of his future health has decided to give up playing the game he loves.

Flatley, who played 38 Tests for the Wallabies and 85 games for the Reds, has made an enormous contribution to the Wallabies and to Australian rugby both on and off the field.

ARU chief and managing director Gary Flowers praised Flatley for his achievements.

"Elton is an extremely talented player who has made a strong contribution to the success of the Wallabies, and his premature retirement is a great loss to the game in Australia," Flowers said.

"Well liked and respected by all who have played with him and against him, Flatley established himself as one of the class inside backs in world."

"Off the field he has been a wonderful role model for kids, especially in his home state of Queensland, but it goes without saying that his health and wellbeing are of paramount importance and everyone is extremely supportive of his decision."

Flatley was on of the youngest players to play for Queensland when he made his state debut in 1996, despite not having played a senior game.

He made his Test debut the next year against England and was an essential part of the 2003 World Cup Wallaby backline. In that tournament he set a new world record for the fastest try ever scored when he crossed after just 18 seconds against Romania.

Flatley will always be remembered for his extraordinary composure and concentration in the 2003 World Cup as he calmly kicked a tricky penalty goal to take England to extra time in the final.
