Dimitris Eleftheropulos,Olympiakos goalkeeper will be honored with the "Saracinesca d' oro" award. He was voted the 3rd best goalkeeper in Europe. The award is made from former Juve goalkeeper Taccani and is being given to the best goalkeepers. The names:

1-Edwin Van der Sar (Juventus)
2-Gianluigi Buffon (Parma)
3-Dimitris Eleftheropulos (Olympiakos)

In my opinion,he deserved it.He has been holding a starting role despite his young age and he has performed exeptionally well. Its time the kid gets some recognition.

Hey,I'm not saying that he is the third best goalkeeper in Europe, but nor Beckham is the 2nd best in the world or the Chezh republic the second best team in the world. They probably base it at some kind of rating and who the hell knows what else...these awards are never objective but the fact is that Eleftheropulos is a decent goallie, and I would place him among the top 15 in Europe.so he deserves some show off.

come on now...this cant be real...speaking of young age, what about casillas of real madrid? he is very young and really good...i think age shouldnt matter...there are greater goalkeepers in europe...im not saying that he is bad, but as we all know, there are better recognized goalkeepers to put 3rd instead of him.

Guys,I'm NOT claiming that Eleftheropulos is the 3rd best goallie in Europe.BUT if you say that Kasillas is better then I'm sure you havent seen him play.Just becuase he is greek doesnt mean he sux and just because Kasillas is spanish doesn mean he is better.

The award is bull**** but all these awards are bull****...I didnt vote to it so the complaints to Mr Taccani.

Since when is Van Der Sar the best goalie in the world?? He hasn't had a good season at Juve.

The problem with all these awards is that you can't really measure who is the best in a sport like football. There are no real statistics that are useful, so these awards are based mostly on opinion.

You really think he deserved this award AMOROSO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?

amo, i didnt accuse you of favoring him as the 3rd best, but what im saying is that if he was that good, we would have heard about him....even if we did, who can beat toldo, kahn, etc?

i dont think just because casillas is spanish, that he is greater than the greek goalkeeper. i just said that if you want to talk about the young keepers, cassilas is a great one that has brought his team to the CL finals.

Argentina,Greek players dont get enough recognition. This is because of the national team.If I said to you that Georgatos is NOT the best greek left back would you believe me? There are many players over here able to play at ANY big club at every league. Here are a few so when you come across them dont get surprised:

Mihalis Konstadinu (striker)
Dimitris Mavrogenidis (right wing-back)
Stelios Venetidis (left back)
Nikos Liberopulos (forward)
Demis Nikolaidis (striker)

You may think that "if they are so good, how come the big teams dont sign them?"

The answer is simple, the Greek clubs dont sell them unless they get an incerdible offer.

A greek club may not sell a player, but that player always has to sign a contract, and doesn't have to extend if he doesn't want to. Remember the Bosman rule? If there are so many of the players we haven't heard of, surely some of them would go to big clubs when they get the chance, and they definately have had the chances unless they all sign 15 year contracts.

IVO,I dont know what Croatian players do but the good players over here get decent salaries. If you put in consideration that most of them love the team they play for you have your explanation. In Greece, players from small clubs dont move abroad. It goes like this:

small club->big club (Olympiakos,PAOK,AEK,Panathinaikos)->abroad (IF)

When a player shines at a small club, all the big teams will go over him. That means he is able to choose his favorite, would you move if you played for your favorite team? anc examble is Demis Nikolaidis.Juve wanted him,Fiorentina wanted him,Liverpool wanted him.AEK agreed to sell him to Fiorentina but he simply said no.He didnt even want to negotiate and he signed a new contract with AEK.Well, this guy,has AEK's symbol as a tatoo on his arm,and every time he scores for AEK he goes to the hardcore fans and celebrate with them by singing and shouting. He is the biggest fan of his team.Apart from this he is leathal.Do you rember the goal he scored against Croatia at the 1-1 draw in Zagreb for the WCV qualifiers? he was the guy who made ther pistol stuff for celebration.

Well that may be the case with this player, but it can't be said for all of the players. You can't generalize like that. Clubs like AEK may be able to pay good, but they can't pay like the big clubs of the west. That being said, if a club like Milan really wants a player, they'll get him, and if they don't, they'll lose out to another big club, not a club like AEK.

I'm not saying Greece doesn't have good players, but I don't think there's as many as you seem to think.

BTW what does "he's the guy that made their pistol stuff for celebration" mean?? I never heard this before.

Nikolaidis after scoring in Zagreb went towards the crowd and started "shooting" a "gun" at them (not real of course,he made it with his fingers).Quite offencive as a celebration but really nice to see if you are with him. :)
