Big European football nights are back in Alvalade and we are hosting tonight one of the classic sides of Italian football. They haven't started their season in the best way but neither did we, although it seems that we are starting to get on the right track faster than they are. There is a huge interest on this game from our side as this is clearly the strongest opponent we will face so far in our official season. Nevertheless this is a match that is far from being decisive in this group stage.

The absences of Elias in midfield and Rodríguez in the back are very important but we are on a high and we must take advantage of it.

Here is the official line-up:

Rui Patrício
João Pereira - Onyewu - Polga - Insúa
Rinaudo
Matías Fernández - Schaars
André Carrillo - van Wolfswinkel - Diego Capel

Bench: Marcelo Boeck, Daniel Carriço, Evaldo, André Santos, André Martins, Bojinov and Diego Rubio.

FORÇA SPORTING!!!! :fero:

I'll be watching the game on tv as they are showing it on open channel here in Sweden  so I'll be only posting here at HT and after the game.

SPORTING 2-1 Lazio at HT
(Ricky van Wolfswinkel 20', Insúa 45'+1'; Klose 40')

Good first half from Sporting with a deserved lead. We've started somehow nervously in the first 5' with some of our players apparently feeling the difference between Lazio and the Paços and Rio Aves of our ligazinha but that quickly disappeared with the help of a very aggressive pressure on the ball everytime we did not have it and a quick and smooth passing game in midfield with Schaars-Rinaudo-Matías not looking worst than when Elias is around.

Carrillo and above all Capel were always dangerous from the flanks and it was from one of many good crosses from the spaniard that our new matador Ricky Van Wolfswinkel had a "Van Basten" moment and backheeled the low cross past Lazio's keeper - brilliant!

Right after it we had Lazio on the ropes and could have quickly scored the second but little by little we reduced the pressure and started commiting unnecessar fouls closer and closer from our box. From one of those the unavoidable happened - Klose scored in what was surely the only dangerous opportunity for the Italians.

Happily sometimes there is some justice in football so right before the ref gave the half time whistle, Emiliano Insúa had a "Roberto Carlos" moment and almost ripped the net with a low shot right next to the left post of Marchetti.

A deserved lead which I hope we can use to start the second half with the intention of going for the 3rd instead of keeping it.

SPORTING 2-1 Lazio - FT
(Ricky van Wolfswinkel 20', Insúa 45'+1'; Klose 40')

Any hopes of a quiet second half were killed very early by the ridiculous sending off of Insúa who saw two yellow cards for absolutely nothing. The ref mistake was a double blow for us because by losing Insúa we didn't end up playing with 10 men but rather with 9 and a half as Evaldo is not worth more than half a player.

From then on we have started only defending our narrow lead, which was very risky but ended up giving us the 3 points. We did it with a mixture of luck (that Konko shot that ended up in our crossbar was miraculous), Lazio's horrible finishing and some enormous balls by people like Rinaudo, Polga (yes him) and Super Gooch, who was a true emperor back there tonight.

For once we were helped by a ref decision and on top of it we got it against a club from a country that always got dodgy decisions on their favour whenever we have faced them in the past. Sculli really looked for that pen and Carriço's slight pull of his jersey almost killed our brave resistance but truth must be said, he was offside in the first place so it was a case of divine Belgian justice. :D

We are now top of our group with a full 6 points out of 6, four above the second placed Vaslui.

Van Wolfswinkel :strong:

Luuk de Jong and Bas Dost also doing well this season. Looks like we not worry for the future once Van Persie retires.

6 goals in 7 official matches and scored in the last five games for us.

We didn't get the old Van Basten as a coach but we got the new one on the pitch. :D

Was a good 1st half, difficult second half obviously that can be attributed mostly to the red card to Emiliano Insua

but the team managed to hang on with a disciplined performance full of character, as well as having lady luck smiling on them as Lazio did make some clear goal scoring chances but failed to capitalize.

all in all another 3 points and SCP continues its winning streak and good football. its great to see enthusiasm returning back to Sporting supporters and its showing in rising attendance figures.

I also notice rival fans stopped posting in this board, I think SCP is starting to make a number of Portuguese football fans uncomfortable.

you can say that again, those final two transfers Insua and elias really turned out great. shame elias cant play in europa, but Insua is such a amazing player for us so far

and yeah, Onyewo has been doing well in recent matches
