Edu and Pires join Gunners

Arsenal Football Club is today
delighted to confirm the signings of
French international Robert Pires
from Marseille and Edu from
Brazilian Champions Corinthians,
both on long term contracts for
undisclosed fees.

Pires (26), an attacking midfielder,
jetted in from Rotterdam early on
Monday morning to complete his
signing and immediately returned to
Paris in time for the French
celebrations. He signed for the
Gunners after his country's victory
over Italy in the Euro 2000 Final,
where he famously set up France's dramatic 'Golden Goal'. His European
Championship winner's medal adds to the World Cup winner's medal he
collected at France '98.

The French international said: "The past month has been like a dream for
me, firstly to win Euro2000 with France and now joining such a great club
as Arsenal. I have great admiration and respect for Arsène Wenger, who
has transformed the careers of my fellow countrymen Thierry Henry, Patrick
Vieira, Emmanuel Petit, Gilles Grimandi and of course, Nicolas Anelka. I
am very much looking forward to some exciting times with the Gunners."

Central midfielder Edu (22), whose full name is Eduardo Cesar Daud
Gaspar, had been with Corinthians since the age of five. In his time with the
Brazilian Champions, Edu, who has Portuguese dual nationality , won the
Brazilian League title in the past two seasons, as well as the 1999 Sao
Paulo State Championship and the 2000 FIFA World Club Championship.

Edu stated: "I have had some wonderful years with Corinthians but am now
relishing the prospect of playing with Silvinho, who is a former team mate of
mine. I know Arsenal is a club with great history and great supporters and it
is my aim to help the club win more trophies."

Manager Arsène Wenger said: "We will again be challenging for the
Premiership title and hoping to make further progress in this year's UEFA
Champions League, so we are very pleased to have signed Robert Pires
and Edu. Both players are very talented, versatile midfielders with fantastic
ability, who will give us an extra dimension in facing the demands of the
forthcoming campaign. Of course we are aiming to strengthen the squad as
much as possible and we are hoping to add one more name before the start
of the new season."

Pires and Edu will join up with their new Arsenal team mates for pre-season
training in the next few weeks.

long term contract......undisclosed fee.......my, how I love arsenal.

I like the sound of edu, looks like he has a great deal of potential.....a star in the making?. As for pires, while I think he is a good player, his attitude seems perhaps some what questionable....but we'll see.

We seem to have a great number of midfielders now, does this mean some will leave?, I hope not we'll need strength in depth for the forth coming season.

Articles on the subject released be the press, quote wenger as saying that we still hope to sign another player. Who could this be, and in what position?. Striker?, defender?, flavio?, edmilson?, I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

'flying pig'...no thanks, although I guess we wouldn't have to make up a new song.

Any deal for edmilson is going to be contingent upon him being able to get a european passport, since he fails to qualify under the current work permit regulations, just like silvinho and edu had too.

Wiltord and henry looked chummy after there great victory over the 'paveyors of crap football', perhaps a move could be in the offing there, deportivo looks to have relaxed their stance aswell.
