People talk about powerful shooting. Roberto Carlos, Ronald Koeman etc. But what about Eder? He must have been in a class of his own. I heard someone measured his freekicks to be as powerful as 174 km/h. Koeman had his at about 113 km/h. R.Carlos just below that again. Any comments to that?

totally correct Jan A.
the guy was AMAZING....also Nelinho (that right back that scored that beauty agaisnt italy in 78) had a vry powerful shot.
Funnily enough they played for the same team , Atletico-MG.....and got second place in the 1980 final agaisnt Flamengo. That game is a historical game..two great teams.
One side the powerful flamengo of Zico, Adilio, Nunes, Leandro, Junior, Marinho, raul etc..
And the other the powerful Atletico with Luisinho, Reinaldo, Eder, Toninho Cerezo, Nelinho etc.....
Flamengo won the battles, and after that final the it was firmed the biggest inter state rivarly of Brazilian club football Atletico-Mg and Flamengo. Of course Atletico fans hate more Flamengo than Flamengo hate Atletico.

Also coming back to Eder, he din't go to the 86 Wc, cause in a friendly agaisnt Peru , he ounched a Peruvian player for nothing..and the player felt unconcious on the floor. :(
Tele Santana did not admit indiscipline or foul play in any of his teams.

And adding to great powerful kicks..branco had a very powerful one also! He killed a Scottish player i think, after the 90 WC.

Jan, R.Carlos' free kick was measured up to 199 km/hr. You are probably thinking about miles/hr. Atleast from what I have heard. But I have seen Eder Kick and Carlos kick..Carlos seems more powerful but Eder is better...Better control etc..

Do you guys remember that kick in WC84 (I think...) It swerved and bounced off the bar. I think Zico kicked it in...Just awesome....Also, I saw a couple of really good shots by Josimar...Any info on him...I had never heard of him before

May be I messed up the km/h thing, but I'm pretty sure Eder's was the most powerful. tonyp3, that freekick you are talking about was in WC 1982 against Argentina. It was a fantastic free-kick and would have been one of the goals of WC history hadn't Fillol got a fingertip to it. He just managed to tip it on to the crossbar and Zico was there to tap it home from 2 yards out.

Ze da Fiel, yeah I remember Eder missed the WC 86. That was sad. He wasn't that old at the time. About 28-29 I'd say.

Tony,
Eder was more powerful than Roberto Carlos. I don't know if yuo guys saw the game...it was a Brazil x Argeitna in the Maracana in 84, Fillol was playing for Flamengo at that time. Eder kicked about 4 free kicks and right in the the juction of the post and the corss bar..Fillol went their and got all of tehm..irt was unbelivable.
That day, everyonw was expecting a good performance by maradona , but who shined was an unkown player called Jacozinho! :)

JOsimar' s career went down after the 86 WC....actually that's all he donw in his career was that WC....the rest was sniffing cocaine. He got a late call for the cup, as Leandro refused to go to the cup beacause Renato Gaucho had been dropped. Then Tele caleld Josimar as a late call......Edson got injured and Josimar took his place and shined to the world :)

eder was powerful, yes, but i remember him more for the magnificent soft and accurate touch he had with the ball. in the 82 world cup, in the first game against russia he scored one of the best world cup goals ever. brazil had been losing 1-0 for the whole match until socrates tied it in the 79th minute. everyone thought it would be a draw. but then junior got the ball on the right near the corner flag. he cut the ball back to FALCAO, who let it go through his legs. eder was running in full stride and he flicked the ball in the air and -- still running -- hit a swerving volley that flew into the back of the net. the russian goalkeeper didn't move. he might have heard the ball, but he didn't see it!!!!!

then against scotland, eder got the ball on the left about a third of the way out and delicately chipped the goalkeeper from the edge of the penalty area. the goalie looked like a little girl watching the ball float over his head. real class by eder! i love him.

a guy who works with me is friends with eder from when they were kids. i think they are both from minas gerais, but i might be wrong. i have some pictures of eder from about a year ago. i'll try to scan them and email them to you folks if you're interested. eder has black and grey hair now and he's got a little bit of a belly, but he still looks very good. he plays some exhibition matches with zico, junior and some of the other guys from back then.

ze da fiel, did eder ever take any free kicks like zico or were they all power shots like roberto carlos? i don't think i ever saw him take a soft one.

Well, as far as I remeber he took the hard ones...cause Zico was the master in the close ones....only Neto (played in late 80's early 90's) could be comparable to him ever in the world!
Zico was such a master that he taught Marcelinho when he was a youngster in Flamengo..and made be Marcelinho the best freee kick taker of the world (short balls and long)
I only remeber Eder taking the long blasting ones......Branco and Roberto Carlos follwoed his style
