It is getting worse. I think by tomorrow morning (now it's already close to midnight and it's getting difficult to find bodies) the deathtoll will surge. Now it already surpasses 7000 deaths.

In BBC, including Map

According to Sky News 2134 dead in Sri Lanka.

Also, according to the BBC (SBS Breaking News) earlier on, they say the waves were reported as being between 10m and 30m high with a force of 500kmh. They also quoted seismologists as saying that in the area where the underwater quake struck, the sea floor rose around 30m.

This is awful to hear :(.

The epicentre was on the tip of Sumatra:

Casualties in other countries will be in coastal areas affected by the tsunami.

Is there anything we can do, such as, setting up an Xtratime emergency relief fund?

I suggest not to check CNN, because they even got the map (of the epicentre) wrong! And CNN is also not very updated on the death toll.

Although the quake is nearest to Indonesia, the number of casualties here isn't as 'big' as in e.g. Sri Lanka because north Sumatra area is not that densely populated. Also, ironically, because the distance between the epicentre and the coast is not that huge, so the tsunami has yet to be that strong upon hitting the land. This is unlike the case with Sri Lanka where the tsunami got intensified due to the fact that it travelled across hundreds of kms in the Indian Ocean.

I don't know of an easy way to set up XT relief fund - I just know that in Singapore the government's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has opened donation scheme. So if anybody is interested, I guess you can use the Donate function of XT (through Paypal) and write a message when you send the donation, that you are sending that donation for the Earthquake (and not for XT). I'll donate that exact amount from my own bank account here.

That's the easiest way I can think of - if anyone can think of a better option, please share it here.

Truly horrible. The latest figures I've heard is about 3200 deaths in India alone and close to 9000 throughout India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Bangladesh and other coastal countries.

The worst affected appear to be fishing communities who live right by the sea. They must have had no warning at all. Eyewitnesses have said the whole thing was over in a minute. 6-10m waves came out of nowhere and receded equally fast washing people out to sea. There were reportedly 400 fishermen out at sea off the coast of Chennai, one of the worst affected cities in India, when the waves struck and all of them are feared dead.

May those who perished in this unfortunate act of nature Rest In Peace.
May those who got injured be healed quickly.

An earthquake is an incident that I wish no one goes through. I cant even imagine such a big earthquake and tsunami together. Very scary.

Australian Red Cross has launched the Asia Quake and Tsunamis Appeal. The appeal supports the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies initial appeal for approximately A$8.5 million.
