I thought we could do with a thread to discuss our national pride at stake in various European competitions. We can also keep track of our coefficient developments here.

Current draws:

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

GROUP D
Liverpool
PSV Eindhoven
Atlético de Madrid
Olympique Marseille

UEFA CUP

NEC Nijmegen - Dinamo Bucharest
Vitória Setubal - sc Heerenveen
Stade Rennes - FC Twente
AFC Ajax - Borak Cacak
Feyenoord - Kalmar FF

COEFFICIENT RANKINGS

05.
France 40,882 7/7 46
06.
Russia 39,125 4/4 35
----------------------------------
07.
Romania 37,623 7/7 26
08.
Netherlands 33,297 6/6
09.
Portugal 30,891 7/7 17
----------------------------------
10.
Ukraine 28,350 3/4 20

In red the number of clubs still active in Europe (as well as the number that started).
In blue the number of points we need to catch up with the nations above us.
In green the number of points the nations below us need to catch up with us.

Full rankings on this site.

Note: we'll be losing a lot of points due to the 04/05 season dropping from the list and after a poor performance last season, we really need to do well this time. If we drop below 9th place, we lose a UEFA Cup spot. Drop to 13th or lower, and our champion will have to go through 1 qualifying round for the Champions League (that's the predicament Belgium is currently trapped in).

And yes, I totally stole the rankings from the Soccerquest.nl forum. I can't be bothered to come up with a new table myself

Probably will be 3/6 next Friday with us out... Dinamo Bucharest probably will do NEC over in Romania while Rennes aren't to be counted out, knowing how well organized French sides can be.

In other words we'll probably stay in 8th spot.

Besides us I see the best chances for Heerenveen and NEC. Looking at the rankings those two would do the best too for the ranking, playing against direct rivals. I think Twente will draw at home against Rennes. Probably some late goal by the French. Feyenoord to fail of course after already losing at home.

Well so far looking good. All our teams on the way to the group stage now. I am happy for our football, even though I dislike Feyenoord. We need all the points we can get, especially with PSV being pathetic.

Let's hope that Twente will hold on against Rennes. They should.

Ajax is misbehaving terribly and typical Dutch; we're already there, why bother to win? Because you are wasting our Uefa coefficient you idiots! We need ajax to win for the points. We're already not in the best position thanks to all our teams performing extremely poorly last year.

ps. I know the top 3 are the only sides which'd in general get more than a million viewers for a first round UEFA Cup tie, but was there any point to showing Ajax when Twente and NEC had very interesting ties ?

I mean I can't imagine many Ajacieden watching tonights game.

Hopefully TV West next season then with ADO :proud:

FC Twente through too (a slight surprise for me tbh) so a historical night for Dutch sides so far :D
Sides going out in the first round of the UEFA Cup is what usually messes up our co-efficient. Now if some can win a game or two in the group stages, we might keep our 8th spot without having to look back too much.
A welcome change for once.

Slagathor, interesting stuff.

Okay, one question: how are the points earned for any given set of matches, i.e., why did Feyenoord earn 0,000 for its 2-2 away goals win over Kalmar? Why did Ajax get 0,333? And etc.

Teak

NEC (0,333)
Heerenveen (0,167)
Twente (0,000)
Ajax (0,333)
Feyenoord (0,000)

They didn't, that was from the week (or two weeks?) before. I'm late, as per usual

The number of points a team earns per victory/draw is divided by the number of teams that country sent into Europe that year. That's why Romania are struggling to hang on to their unusually high position. Climbing the rankings is easy when you can only send one team into Europe and they're performing great. But staying there once you get to send 7 teams is a completely different matter. Greece couldn't hold on, neither could Portugal and now Romania neither. When you look at it like that; Dutch football's consistent high ranking is quite remarkable.
