a move for gazza would be a huge mistake. in order to clear out the necessary cap room gm dave kasper would have to unload even more young talent than he already has. plus, anyone who attended the united-galaxy game at rfk last weekend, anyone who heard louder cheers for mauricio cienfuegos warming up on the sideline than any cheers for the home team's work on the field, realizes that hudson is right in pursuing an el salvadoran as the side's next international signing. ever since united dumped raul diaz arce (the first time), the club's large fan base of el salvadoran immigrants has made a lot of united home games feel like road games, especially against teams featuring el salvadorans. and the last time i checked, dc united already had a painfully slow, temperamental, over the hill playmaker. why would we need two? so hudson and kasper are right in going after young el salvadoran talents - players that won't demand a maximum salary, and won't count against the limit of foreign internationals on the roster. sure gazza might be an entertaining addition, but in the long run what united needs is a player with a future, and someone who can attract a greater fan base and launch united back to the top of mls attendance charts.

Getting Gazza would be foolish. DC needs to keep building on its foundation of youth.

Former Clarets star Paul Gascoigne is poised to join MLS side DC United for the remainder of the season after flying into Washington DC today.

The former England international is expected to sign a contract that will see him play for practically next to nothing for the rest of the season for DC United. The current MLS campaign comes to an end in October with Gascoigne reportedly to be offered an option for a further year, with the new season starting in March, 2003.
DC United manager Ray Hudson tried to sign Gazza from Everton last season when he was manager of Miami Fusion, but the midfielder eventually ended up at Turf Moor, making three starts and three substitute appearances as The Clarets failed to make the play-offs.

The move is expected to go through officially in the middle of next week - the 35-year-old is poised to sign a deal with MLS in New York before being 'allocated' to DC United.

Am I missing something? Isn't this a horrible, stupid move on DC United's part?

If nothing else, think of the numerous very young players on this team who will be exposed to a player who is hardly a role model.

News From the Liverpool Echo tody stated that the US Congress has blocked the deal that would send Paul Gasgoine to DC United. A spokesman for Congress Issued a statement that said there is not enough Alcohol within the state to support the needs of Mr Gascoine and Congress. Imagine the US congress showing up on a vote for the Enviorment Sober. So for the good of the country they are bar ring no pun intended Gazza from comming to DC.

gazza's not coming to dc united. kasper and hudson won't dump ryan nelsen, marco etcheverry, or jaime moreno to sign a player the team doesn't need. even if he is willing to play for dirt, he's not worth it. plus, this article from today's washington post pretty much repudiates the teamtalk article colo colo posted. who are we going to believe? teamtalk? or the washington post?

'Gazza' will try out with D.C. United

July 23, 2002

CHANTILLY, Va. (AP) -- Paul Gascoigne, the flamboyant English soccer star known as ``Gazza'' and a 1990 World Cup star, will audition for D.C. United.

The 35-year-old midfielder arrives Wednesday and joins United on Friday. He's expected to stay with the team at least a few days.

``A player like him, you don't need a tryout,'' spokesman Boris Flores said. ``But the coach wants to see how his fitness is, and whether it's a good fit for him and a good fit for our team.''

Gascoigne led England to the 1990 World Cup semifinals. But he injured his knee in a reckless tackle in the 1991 FA Cup final.

Injuries and personal problems, which made for popular fodder among the English tabloids, have plagued Gascoigne since. He bounced from team to team and most recently played for Burnley, an English Division One club.

United has auditioned many international players this season in hopes of reviving a struggling offense. Paul Dalglish, son of Scottish soccer legend Kenny Dalglish, had an impressive workout earlier this season, but team officials were unable work out a contract under MLS' tight salary cap.

Gasgoigne joins D.C. United

Gasgoigne joins D.C. United

WASHINGTON, July 24 (AFP) -- Former England football star Paul Gascoigne arrived here Wednesday and began preparing for his inaugural workout Friday with D.C. United, which will likely sign the 35-year-old midfielder next week.
Gascoigne could reverse the fortunes of the Major League Soccer club and at the same time revive his own career, one marred by admissions several years ago that he physically abused his former wife Sheryl.
"We shouldn't be haunted by our past," MLS commissioner Don Garber said. "Everybody is entitled to have the right to prove they are a different person, a new person, and have learned from their mistakes."
The famed forward nicknamed "Gazza" was a hero for England in a 1990 World Cup semi-final run and was a star for such top European clubs as Newcastle, Tottenham, Lazio and Glasgow Rangers.
Free agent Gascoigne, who ended last season on loan to First Division Burnley from Everton, will watch United's home match here Saturday against New England and join United for several workouts to judge his fitness.
"When a serious talent like Paul Gascoigne becomes available, you have to give it serious consideration," said United coach Roy Hudson, who like Gascoigne is from Newcastle.
If Gascoigne and United agree to a deal after workouts through the middle of next week, he would likely make his MLS debut here August 10 against Kansas City.
That might be just in time for United, which lost 1-0 at Columbus on Wednesday and saw its scoreless streak reach 241 minutes. United, at 6-10 with two drawn, trails Columbus and Kansas City by five points for the final MLS playoff berth.
Gascoigne reportedly rejected offers from Turkey and Dubai to play in the United States.
Gascoigne's arrival would likely require some lineup shifts for United, which also has Bolivian star Marco Etcheverry at midfielder.

Some quotes on this subject from various sources courtesy of Soccer America:

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING

"D.C. United will conduct proper due diligence with the player.
There's no doubt he's a bit of a lightning rod, but once they spend
some time with him and see whether he's fit to play, I'm sure they
will make the proper decision."

-- Anschutz Entertainment Group executive Kevin Payne on the D.C.
United tryout of Paul Gascoigne, whose career has been plagued by
disciplinary problems on and off the field, including a confessed
wife-beating, several reported incidents of public drunkeness, making
provocative gestures to Glasgow Celtic fans during Old Firm games and
telling a live Norwegian TV audience to f*** off. (The Washington
Post)

"I've spoken to John Harkes and he speaks very highly of Washington."

-- Paul Gascoigne's agent Ian Elliott, assuring the Radio Five Live
audience that D.C. United is the right place for his client. (The
Guardian)

"And [Gascoigne] needn't worry about the risks of playing too many
matches there either. Last season, the MLS decided not to bother with
the last two rounds of games because the playoff positions had
already been decided."

-- The BBC, referring to games MLS canceled because of the Sept. 11
attacks. The 35-year-old Gascoigne started the 2001-2002 season with
English Premier League Everton and finished with English First
Division (second tier) Burnley. He made 23 appearances for Everton
and six for Burnley, often as a sub.

"The people at the club were lovely but they were naive in a football
sense. At times it was a farce but the way of life compensated for
that."

-- Former Miami Fusion midfielder Ian Bishop tells the BBC what MLS
life will be like for Gascoigne. (BBC)

"Gazza will love the lifestyle and on the pitch he will cruise it.
There are some decent individuals but no great teams. ... Overall,
maybe it's a similar standard to the English Second Division (third
tier), but slower in pace."

-- Bishop. (BBC)

Gascoigne, DC United go separate ways

WASHINGTON, Aug 1 (AFP) -- Paul Gascoigne is once again looking for team to play for after his dream of playing Major League Soccer in America was cut short.
Gascoigne and DC United have agreed not to pursue contract talks, the club announced on its web site on Thursday.
Gascoigne, 35, had been training with the American east coast club for the past week.
"After long and involved discussions and having thoroughly considered all matters regarding a permanent, long-term move to D.C. United and Major League Soccer, both United head coach Ray Hudson and Paul Gascoigne have mutually agreed not to pursue a contractual obligation for the remainder of the 2002 MLS season," said United technical director Dave Kasper.
