Southampton are understood to be the front-runners in the race to sign Aston Villa
midfielder Mark Draper. Everton are also monitoring developments.

Draper made just one substitute appearance for Villa last season and was farmed
out to Spanish club Rayo Vallecano.

The 29-year-old, who cost Villa £3.25million from Leicester in 1995, said on
Thursday: "I am going on holiday for a couple of weeks and I will not be making any
decision until I return home.

"Southampton have indicated they would like to sign me. But there is also interest
from Everton although I have not actually spoken to them."

The former Notts County man has scored 11 goals in 155 appearances for the Villans.

I always thought Draper was an outstanding player when he first signedfor Villa. Maybe a villa fan can tell me what went wrong with his career?

Draper was superb when he was at Leicester but I was never sure of his Villa form. He started allright but then struggled to get in with the emergence of Lee Hendrie. I think that injuries have nit helped and the manager seems to buy a lot of midfielders such as Boatang, Thompson, Curcic, Merson and Carbone (forwards?).

I think that if =the Saints get him then they may, at last have a very good side with players such as Pahas, Richards, Paul Jones and Draper. Also what has happened to David Hirst?
