Subotic's stunning start captures Loew's attention

Subotic has played for both the United States Under-17 and Under-20 sides, but has applied for German citizenship and FIFA will rule on his eligibility for die Mannschaft should he qualifiy.

Under FIFA rules, Subotic can currently only play for the US, Bosnia-Herzegovina or Croatia, his country of ethnicity, but the German Football Federation (DFB) - and Loew - are keeping an eye on him.

"We assume he can play for us, because it has not played an A-international for the United States," DFB media director Harald Stenger told the newspaper Suddeutsche Zeitung.

But Subotic says he is just concentrating on playing well for Dortmund, even if Loew's attentions are flattering.

"I read the coach of the national team has expressed a positive interest in me, but I don't have much to say on the subject," the teenager told German agency SID.

"I am not even sure myself where I stand in terms of eligibility."

Rafael van der Vaart, the Dutch midfielder who plays for Real Madrid, has tipped American Neven Subotic as one of the top players in the Bundesliga this season.

Van der Vaart, who previously had a successful stint in Germany while playing for Hamburg, brought up Subotic when asked by Bild who he would pick out as the best player of the season thus far.

The young Borrusia Dortmund defender has impressed Van der Vaart, though he also mentioned Leverkusen's Rene Adler and Hamburg's Mladen Petric as players who have performed well.

He singled out Subotic for specific praise, though, saying, "I like Dortmund centerback Neven Subotic very much."

In an interesting conincidence, the one other player that Van der Vaart rated, Hoffenheim's Vedad Ibisevic, shares Bosnian and American roots with Subotic. Both were born in the former Yugoslavia, but both spent key parts of their soccer development years in the United States. Ibisevic was in St. Louis playing club and college soccer, while Subotic played in Florida with the U.S. U17 national team.

Ibisevic has already committed to the Bosnian national team, while Subotic remains eligible for Bosnia, Serbia and the United States. His father has made clear he would like his son to play for Serbia, but Subotic is said to favor a return to U.S. colors.

Well apart from living in the US for a few years what other ties has he got to you? He's a Serb and should play for Serbia. It's the right decision and you'll just have to live with it. We lost Marko Marin earlier on this year to the Germans so this kind of makes up for it. Anyway wouldn't you rather play with the likes of Vidic and Ivanovic at the back than whoever the US have?
US sawker fed spent money on him for his development , plus he used to play for the US youth teams and he said hell play for he US. hes a punk.hes wors ethan rossi

I think Neven himself can say it better than I can:

“I’ve played through residency so I’m an American. And I’ve worn the crest, and thats also a thing you have to respect, yea, if you wear it once, you’re not gonna wear another crest. That’d be kinda like backstabbing I would say.”

hes an asshole..i hope he breaks his legs lol
