Subotic's stunning start captures Loew's attention

Subotic has played for both the United States Under-17 and Under-20 sides, but has applied for German citizenship and FIFA will rule on his eligibility for die Mannschaft should he qualifiy.

Under FIFA rules, Subotic can currently only play for the US, Bosnia-Herzegovina or Croatia, his country of ethnicity, but the German Football Federation (DFB) - and Loew - are keeping an eye on him.

"We assume he can play for us, because it has not played an A-international for the United States," DFB media director Harald Stenger told the newspaper Suddeutsche Zeitung.

But Subotic says he is just concentrating on playing well for Dortmund, even if Loew's attentions are flattering.

"I read the coach of the national team has expressed a positive interest in me, but I don't have much to say on the subject," the teenager told German agency SID.

"I am not even sure myself where I stand in terms of eligibility."

No, I want Subotic. The kid is one of the best defenders in the Bundesliga.

That's a silly question. Of course he'd be useful to us. He's much better than Chad Marshall. :rollani:

If WE don't want him, it would explain why WE continue to be a cut rate power in OUR game.

If WE as an up-and-coming soccer-footballing nation cannot find a place for a 19yr old defensive centerpiece, then WE deserve our failing place on the international footballing stage, IMHO.

he is not imperitive in my opinion, he could be a useful player in the USNT but do you really want a player who takes close to 2 years to decide on who to play for? I have a feeling whoever he chooses to play for he won't have that much heart.

Well, its now official that he won't play for Germany (FIFA ruling), so he still could play for us, in fact, I think this ruling definitely improved our chances.

Rafael van der Vaart, the Dutch midfielder who plays for Real Madrid, has tipped American Neven Subotic as one of the top players in the Bundesliga this season.

Van der Vaart, who previously had a successful stint in Germany while playing for Hamburg, brought up Subotic when asked by Bild who he would pick out as the best player of the season thus far.

The young Borrusia Dortmund defender has impressed Van der Vaart, though he also mentioned Leverkusen's Rene Adler and Hamburg's Mladen Petric as players who have performed well.

He singled out Subotic for specific praise, though, saying, "I like Dortmund centerback Neven Subotic very much."

In an interesting conincidence, the one other player that Van der Vaart rated, Hoffenheim's Vedad Ibisevic, shares Bosnian and American roots with Subotic. Both were born in the former Yugoslavia, but both spent key parts of their soccer development years in the United States. Ibisevic was in St. Louis playing club and college soccer, while Subotic played in Florida with the U.S. U17 national team.

Ibisevic has already committed to the Bosnian national team, while Subotic remains eligible for Bosnia, Serbia and the United States. His father has made clear he would like his son to play for Serbia, but Subotic is said to favor a return to U.S. colors.

hell play for the USA....gooch and him should be a brutal tandem and add wynne...one of the most physical D lines in da world

He is 19yrs old and his starting for a highly rated German side, yet OUR US Soccer technical staff couldn't find a place for him in OUR U-20 side.

What defect did they see in his game to exclude him? Who did US Soccer think WE have that were better than him? Why aren't they playing for Barcelona, Real Madrid or Man United, if they are so good?

We could also loose Adu at this rate.

they probably thought Sturgis would develop by now but he hasn't lived up to potential as he was taken by Seattle in the expansion draft. Apparently there is a decent American talent play for Hertha Berlin, Arguez.

Subotic holds a grudge against the US because he wasn't selected for the youth World Cup, not sure if you want to pursue a player who obviously holds some grudge. He really wants to play for Germany

BELGRADE, Serbia: Borussia Dortmund defender Neven Subotic has decided to play international football for Serbia instead of the United States, according to Serbia coach Radomir Antic on Friday.

However, U.S. Soccer Federation president Sunil Gulati said otherwise.

"As with previous reports regarding Neven, his representative continues to advise us that the stories are untrue and no decision has been made in regards to his international future," Gulati said.

There has been no word from 20-year-old Subotic, who was born in Bosnia and holds an American passport. He has played for the U.S. Under-17s.

Antic said he plans to pair Subotic with Manchester United's Nemanja Vidic in the center of Serbia's defense in next year's World Cup qualifiers. He was expected to make his debut in a friendly against Cyprus in February.

There have been false reports before. I'm a little scared.

Yeah, I don't think Subotic has decided yet. If he had, he'd have said something. He's said regularly that he's not going to make a decision anytime soon.

... He was leaning to Germany, but FIFA shot that down. He only had US(A) and Serbia has his next option, and he picked Serbia.

Reports are that he will start next to Vidic in Serbias next international friendly.

I don't know if WE can call his actions "a grudge against his adopted counrtry", US(A), when a fully veted meber of the federation slated to evaluate the talent pool states openly, with quatation marks around it that, WE don't think he has developed enough to be included in ORS squad. That sounds plain as day to me.

Please, tell me where you are hearing that he's chosen Serbia. The only report is that AP story.

Until Neven comes out and says anything, I don't think he's made up his mind.
