I dislocated my kneecap at soccer tonight (Friday) and have spent the last five hours in the hospital. Has this happened to anyone on here before? If so, what kind of activities am I limited to until the aching goes away? When can I run again? Is there any kind of weight training I can do to make the ligaments and muscles stronger?

My cousin had a similar problem couple of years ago. It took him almost a year to completely recover.

I personally suffer from knee problems that force the knee cap from side to side instead of up and down and it cause me a lot of aches and pains if I don't get an extremely proper stretch and warm up.

As to a dislocated knee cap, it sounds terrible, but I don't have a clue about it. I recommend www.webmd.com for physical problems such as this, and you can talk to a local physio to monitor your progress.

We kind of need to know how bad the dislocation was, and what the doctor told you to do. I've read that sometimes you'll need to be put on a knee immobiliser, I'm hoping that isn't the case. If you didn't tear anything, 5 to 6 weeks is an achievable goal from what I've read. Write us back with more information.

well,, it happened to a friend of mine and it really sucked as he said,,, he told me also to ask a doctor's opinon cuz it's a really sensitive situation.

and yes khimik,, sorry to say,, my friend recovered i think after 10 months ... (he can walk but he didnt play soccer).

Yes, it's happened to me twice and I'm just 18. I'll post more tomorrow when I'm more...erm...sober. :D

It happened to me 3 times in 9 months (about 2 years ago)...all cause I did not go to physiotherapy the 1st time that I ****ed it. Also I did not give it time to heal, as after a month started playing football again, so it got dislocated twice more times:(

If I was you, I would go to physiotherapy and at least for 3 months, dont do anything, as you will **** it up again.

I've been told it was "not that bad", as the x-rays showed no major ligament damage and with me able to walk on it it probably means the tendons aren't damaged either.

I plan to do some really light exercise to get it back working again; swimming, walking, little things like that.

Well if your able to walk, you haven't messed up a lot which is nice:). But to be safe, buy those things like bandage for your knee, so your kneecap does not dislocate in the near future.

I'm looking into buying a proper brace that I can run in when I get back to playing fitness. I have it an immobilised brace at the moment but that really restricts movement all together. It feels a lot like when I twisted my left knee in 2000.

Both of my knees are really stuffed though :pp

You seem to be taking it pretty well. :)

I dislocated my elbow about a month ago playing football and was feeling so down. I still can't move it a lot and still can't carry heavy stuff but it's almost ok now. That was a bleak period for me.. it hurt a lot and I hated being in a sling. I can't wait to play again though. :) Stay strong and I like your positive attitude so you should recover well. :)

wouldnt the doctor tell you that?

Pfft, Public Hospital? I think not. I would've spoken all of a few sentences to the Doctors there.

depends on the severity of the injury and it is not always apparent to all doctors. Try to see a sports medicine doctor. Ice Ice ICE! you must ice the area until swelling and soreness is gone. Once that occurs, try to move the knee as much as possible. First jsut in the air, then add small weignts to your foot, and then work on just standing and doing 1/4 sqauts.

I had this problem when I was a teenager and now am a rehabilitation therapist. It is important to increase the strengh and size muscles in your leg once you are able to walk and run OK so they will support your knee. Once you can stand and jog a bit, I suggest you get a balance board or BOSU ball as they work great for knee injuries. Football will be some ways away.....10 months is not too long if the injury was bad. For now make sure to get the rest and get the knee moving a little once it feels better

A brace will help with getting back into the sports but you shouldnt need it after doing proper rehabilitation.

Yeah, same with me. It was a case of put it back in, bandage you up and off you go. So basically most of what I've picked up is from people who've had the same injury and from reading round on the net.

But what I found was that it's really not like other injuries in that after the knee cap got put back in place, there was very little pain. Honestly, 15 minutes after it was put back, I felt as if I could have stood up, walked out of the hospital and started playing again. But obviously it doesn't work like that, and the reason you can't play for however many months is because the ligaments have been weakened and the sooner you play again the more likely the injury is to recur. Hence, as there is no pain, there's a temptation to return before you're knee is strong enough.

I'm guessing like me, you either have a very heavily bandaged knee, or it's in a cast. Obviously as this prohibits movement, it leads to losing a large amount of your muscle mass on that leg, so the first thing you have to do is try and get the movement back in your knee when the bandage comes off. I was given a very good tip for how to do this:

- Get a tray (like the kind of tray you serve drinks on) and also a belt. Sit with your back against a wall, and your legs out straight in front of you. Put the foot of your bad leg onto the try, and fasten the belt around the ankle of your bad leg. Then just try and bend your leg as far as it will go by pulling the belt, and the tray will slide easily along the floor (obviously you need a carpeted floor for this to work :D). Just repeat until you have something like full movement back.

Then you need to get the bulk of the muscle back. There's specific excercises you can do for that such as:

- Sit on the floor with you legs out in front of you. Put a rolled up towel or cushion beneath the damaged knee and push down on it with the back of your knee, trying to sqush the pillow/towel.

- Find a step somewhere. Stand so that your standing with the foot of your damaged leg on the step and your good leg off the step so that all your weight is on your bad leg. Then just bend and then straighten your bad leg, making sure you do it slow enough to have the desired effect.

But if your like me and would rather actually be doing something outdoors, I think cycling is also a decent exercise.

And once you have the muscle bulk back, you can then try to specifically target the muscles on the inside of your knee which will hopefully keep your knee cap in place. The exercise I was given for this is:

- Lean with your back against a wall and your legs bent so you're in a "sitting down" position. Then slide your back up and down the wall by straightening and bending your legs. While your doing this, try and push your knees inwards, towards each other. You might want to try putting something like a football between your knees and squezing that while your doing it. you might want to slightly deflate the football to give better perchase between your knees.

But I wouldn't take any of my advice as being gospel. As I said, most of it is just little things I've picked up and seemed to work for me without any real science behind it. And obviously it doesn't work brilliantly because it happened to me again after this program, but I was a bit sceptical about the need to do exercises - I thought just give it time and everything will sort itself out but it doesn't work like that. But I mean it will probably happen to me again, but you just have to try and put it out of your mind, something that isn't easy at all.

That said, there was a guy who used to play football at my club who had the same problem. His kneecap would come out every couple games, and it got to a point where when it came out, he would just hobble to the sidelines, put it back in himself and carry on playing! I dread to think what his knee would be like in old age, though. :(

And that's about it. Hope this is of some help, and I hope your recover quickly. It really is a horrendous injury, I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. :(

when the kneecap moves out of place....often some other injury can occur as the knee is very weak when this happens. ligament stretch/tear or a muscle strain for example.

I've got my appointment with the specialists for the 22nd of December so I'll bring this topic back up after I see them; 8:40am appointment! :googly:
