Guess I have to write something on brazilian football again and it turnes out to be a question. Ze, what about all these different cups & leagues, I sort of don't get it....

And Ze, where are you since quite some time anyway, celebrating the 500 years with 500 galons of beer or what... :)

Alexx is good that you don't get it , cause that means you are a normal person :)
It a mess the brazilian calender...it always been
The thing is the follwing, during the first 2 months of the year, their is the Regional tournaments. The cup of the northeast, the cup of the south, the cup of the central west, and the most attractive one the Rio-Sao Paulo...which is the only on good. These cups are only for a warm up, as things normally only start in Brazil after Carnival....mid february/march.
Then it starts the state tournaments, by this time the Regional tournaments have ended....Then the teams play inside their state theit own leagues. THe teams from Sao Paulo plau the Paulista league, the ones from Rio play the Rio league, the ones from MInas Gerais play the Mineiro league etc.....a tournament for each state.....but the Sao Paulo league is the biggest followed by the Rio.
This semester their is still the Brazil cup...sort of Fa Cup, or a Coppa Italia.

At the end of the season there's the Brazilian championship which is the biggest domesnti trophy......the top 20 clubs play agaisnt each other to see who's the best of BRazil.
And the Libertadores is the equivalent of the Champions League in europe.
Last year we won the Sao Paulo leageu and the Brazilian championship! :)

First of all, good to have you back from celebration :)

And then, after your explanation, it's rather understandable. Only one thing, the regional tournaments, do the big clubs participate as well, or is this for the small clubs only ?

The rio-sp is only the top 8 of the two states:
For Rio: Fluminense, Botafogo , Vasco and Flamengo
For Sao Paulo: Corinthians, Palmeiras, Sao Paulo and Santos......POrtuguesa are left out!
THe small clubs only play the state tournaments...in some years like this one the have to play a play off, to play with the big clubs....but it varies from state to state!
In the 80's the Rio league was bigger, but the 90's Sao Paulo clubs have dominated the scene!
