Venezuela is the best NT in the world. It is just that they don't have the recognition like Argentina or Brazil and the players are the most talented. They are even being scouted by the Saudi Arabia league.

Olympic players included in Paraguay squad for qualifier

ASUNCION, Aug 26 (Reuters) -

Ten members of Paraguay's Olympic squad, which will play Argentina for the gold medal on Saturday, have been called up for next month's World Cup qualifier against Venezuela.

Goalkeeper Diego Barreto, defenders Emilio Martinez and Julio Manzur, midfielders Edgar Barreto and Aureliano Torres and striker Fredy Bareiro were among the players included in the 24-man squad for the game in Asuncion on September 5.

Also included are regulars Roque Santa Cruz of Bayern Munich and Reggina's Carlos Paredes.

Paraguay, who qualified for the Olympic tournament at Brazil's expense, have beaten Italy and Iraq on the way to the final.

"Venezuela like to play on the attack, even away from home, so we have to take care at the back," coach Anibal Ruiz told reporters.

Paraguay are attempting to qualify for their third successive World Cup and are fourth in the South American group with 11 points from seven games. Venezuela are in sixth place a point behind.

The top four teams qualify directly for the 2006 finals in Germany while the fifth plays off against the Oceania region winners -- either Australia or the Solomon Islands.

Squad:

Goalkeepers: Justo Villar (Newell's Old Boys), Aldo Bobadilla (Cerro Porteno), Diego Barreto (Cerro Porteno).

Defenders: Pedro Sarabia (Cerro Porteno), Emilio Martinez (Libertad), Julio Cesar Caceres (Nantes), Julio Manzur (Guarani), Carlos Gamarra (no club), Paulo Da Silva (Toluca/Diablos), Delio Toledo (Real Zaragoza)

Midfielders: Edgar Barreto (NEC Nijmegan), Diego Gavilan (Internacional), Edgar Gonzalez (Guarani), Julio Enciso (Olimpia), Carlos Paredes (Reggina), Aureliano Torres (Guarani), Mauro Monges (Nacional)

Forwards: Roque Santa Cruz (Bayern Munich), Raul Roman (Olimpia), Cesar Ramirez (Cerro Porteno), Nelson Cuevas (River Plate), Jose Cardozo (Toluca/Diablos), Fredy Bareiro (Libertad), Julio Gonzalez (Vicenza)

THE CONMEBOL WORLD CUP QUALIFIERS

Paraguay v. Venezuela

(04) PAR: W02-01 D01-01 L00-02 F06-03 A02-06

(06) VEN: W01-02 D00-01 L02-01 F02-04 A05-02

With this win Paraguay will surely consolidates their claim to a spot in the WC 2006. For the moment they are tied with Chile with 11 points, just 2 points behind Group leader Brazil and 1 behind second placed Argentina.

Paraguay topped Group C in the Copa America, 1 point above Brazil. However they were beaten by Uruguay in the quarter-finals, going down 1-3. Venezuela had a poor outing in Peru. They managed only one draw in Group A (1-1 against Bolivia) and went out in the group stages. What is conspicuous is the fact that whereas they managed to score only 2 goals, Paraguay scored twice that much despite being in the tougher group.

In the Qualifiers played so far, these two teams have not met but taking a cue with a common opponent, Argentina, it must be noted that Venezuela was soundly trashed by 0-3 at home but the Paraguayans held the Argentines to a 0-0 draw in their away tie. That is also evident in this qualifiers where Paraguay has scored 9 whereas Venezuela managed only 6. Paraguay has a Gd of + 1 whilst Venezuela has –1.

Paraguay have not lost at home and conceded only 2 goals in the 3 matches played (average 0.6), the visitors who are not known to be a high scoring outfit, will find it very difficult to get a goal today.

With this home advantage and a very positive stats against the visitors, bet on the home side to win easily!
