Serie A Week 13 - 28/11/04 (15.00)
Sampdoria - Parma

Stadio Marassi

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It would be fair to suggest that most neutrals believed that both Sampdoria and Parma would have more than a combined 26 points by this juncture of the season. The Gialloblu have been stuck in the relegation zone since the start of term but the port-based club are only two points above them after 12 games.

Sampdoria are both desperate for the points but also for a goal. Walter Novellino’s side haven’t scored in Serie A for four games now – since the 2-0 win at Chievo back on October 27. Only picking up two 0-0 draws since then, against Atalanta and Cagliari, have significantly increased the pressure on their tactician. Fortunately, star striker Fabio Bazzani returns after suspension.

Parma go into the Marassi game having salvaged a point against Chievo. Despite having the young Potenza dismissed, who is subsequently suspended, they collected a 2-2 draw. Boss Silvio Baldini will be hoping that his young side can avoid defeat after stretching their unbeaten run to four games.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sampdoria (probable): Antonioli; Zenoni, Pavan, Falcone, Tonetto; Diana, Volpi, Palombo, Doni; Flachi, Bazzani

Parma (probable): Frey; Bonera, Bovo, Cannavaro, Contini; Simplicio, Bresciano; Marchionni, Morfeo, Grella; Gilardino

We absolutely need to win at Marassi where we have just won once vs Livorno (and not exactly in a clear way) till now, but Parma are not the ideal opponent to obtain that. In the last season probably they hardly deserved 2 points in 2 games... and in the end they got 6 points. Both times we were stopped by the goalie Frey, who had probably his best performances of the season against us, and at Marassi also by the referee Farina, supporter of Genoa CFC, who denied us a clear penalty kick in the very last minutes.
The hope first of all is that the duo Bergamo-Pairetto won't send us Farina again, a light injury whick keeps out Frey for the game is also welcome of course, but above all the hope is that our forwards will finally score.

As regards the starting lineup, Doni probably regained the place in it thanks to the goal at Torino so the starting lineup should be:
Antonioli - C.Zenoni, Pavan, Falcone, Tonetto - Diana, Volpi, Palombo, Doni - Flachi, Bazzani.
The alternative without Doni: Tonetto shifted at midfield and Pisano or Sacchetti in as left back.
Yesterday in the friendly vs the Primavera the final score was 6-0, Bazzani and Flachi scored two goals each one.

Flachi expects fireworks Saturday 27 November, 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sampdoria star Francesco Flachi has just one goal to his name so far this season, but thinks he and the team will run riot against Parma tomorrow.

“At the start of the campaign I was concerned, especially after losing our first three games,” admitted the striker. “Now it’s true we haven’t scored in a while, but the team is playing well and we’re in the thick of the mid-table battle.”

The Blucerchiati had an appalling start to the season, and though their results have improved, the Genoa-based side hasn’t netted in its last four Serie A games.

“If the whole team was playing badly and not scoring goals, then I would be more worried than I am,” added Flachi. “Thankfully in every match we have created plenty of opportunities, so eventually the goals will come.”

Last year Sampdoria were heavily reliant on the goals of Flachi and Fabio Bazzani, who are failing to deliver the goods so far in 2004-05.

With this in mind, the club is expected to bring in a new forward during the January transfer window. The most likely option is former Bari hitman Jonathan Spinesi, who is currently starring for Serie B minnows Arezzo, though he is also a target for Parma and Bologna.

About Doni: he started on the bench, but replaced a disappointing Diana at the beginning of the second half. His performance was rather good, but he got booked (for protesting again  ) and so he will miss the next important match at Olimpico.
The worst players on the pitch were Diana and Bazzani, they seem the ghosts of themselves.

Francesco Flachi converted a penalty with practically the last kick of the game to send Parma hurtling back into the danger zone.

Sampdoria and Parma have both struggled to get results this season and the Blucerchiati's firepower is boosted by the return from suspension of Fabio Bazzani. The Gialloblu had to do without Potenza following his one-match ban and Paolo Cannavaro was dropped.

The visitors had the first real chance when Francesco Antonioli performed a double save on Mark Bresciano's free kick and Fabio Simplicio's follow-up.

Palombo's effort was charged down and Sergio Volpi curled one of his trademark free kicks inches past the post.

Cristiano Doni was dropped from the starting eleven, but replaced Aimo Diana for the second half.

The game sprang to life after the break as Alberto Gilardino's effort was charged down, then at the other end Sebastien Frey rushed off his line and just about got the ball away from Palombo after his clearance had been intercepted.

Frey flew to punch substitute Doni's rising strike out from under the crossbar in the closing stages.

However, deep into stoppages Cesare Bovo dragged back Flachi in the box and he was inevitably sent off for a last man foul. The penalty was also clear and Flachi buried the winning goal with the last kick of the game.
