Darcheville seals Bordeaux move

Thursday 16th May 2002

Lorient striker Jean-Claude Darcheville completed his move to Bordeaux on Thursday, signing a four-year deal.

The Girondins remain in talks with star striker Pauleta, who coach Elie Baup believes could form a title-winning frontline with his new recruit.

Darcheville, 27, was the third leading scorer in the league last season, hitting 19 goals for relegated Lorient.

He signed off on a high last week with the only goal of the game in the French Cup final against Bastia.

The strike represented sweet revenge for Darcheville, who was singled out for criticism when Lorient lost limply to Bordeaux in the League Cup final.

Pairing Darcheville and Pauleta up front is a mouth-watering prospect for Baup, but the Championnat player of the year has stalled over signing a new deal as the Girondins have so far proved unwilling to match his wage demands.

The Portugal star, who has two years of his contract to run, is understood to have demanded a hefty pay-rise, prompting president Jean-Louis Triaud to admit Bordeaux may have to offload their £8 million-rated prize asset.

Pauleta's 21 league goals made up more than half of Bordeaux's tally last season.

Lorient lose Darcheville to Bordeaux and also left young defender Arnaud Le Lan who is leaving to Rennes.

Le Lan was also a starter in the Lorient side that won the final vs Bastia.
