Yesterday the news broke that forward Oliver Konsa (Estonian championship winner with Nõmme Kalju and Estonian international with 20 caps and 0 goals) was arrested for cocaine dealing. The story even made it into English tabloids: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2232362/Estonia-international-Oliver-Konsa-arrested-suspicion-dealing-cocaine.html

today it was announced that public prosecutor's office has started a case against 6 Narva Trans footballers suspected of match-fixing. Those stories have been around for years and years about Trans and there have been certain cases where players have been banned for it...match-fixing and losing/conceding goals on purpose has been especially prevalent in Trans eurocup games and in Baltic League.

But now there are rumors of something massive which will most likely involve many players for several clubs. Not a good thing but this is what happens when matches involving penniless semi-amateur footballers are made available in betting sites all over the world.

Estonian FA bans the following 8 individuals from all football related activity for a year due to match fixing suspicion: Maksim Gruznov, Vitali Gussev, Erik Grigorjev, Aleksandr Kulik, Aleksandr Tarassenkov, Sergei Leontovitš, Deniss Jõgiste and Anton Sereda.

the ones in bold are well-known players.

For infromation that Gruznov is all time record scorer in Meistriliiga and Gussev was Meistriliiga top scorer in 2009

and yes of course they're not well known internationally but on Mesitriliiga level they've been top class players...it's kind of like Lampard, Scholes, Crouch and Robbie Keane had decided to cheat in EPL. :D

of course being "top class" in this instance means they still earn less per month in Meistriliiga than an average taxi driver will earn in London so no wonder they want to cheat :D

I've got to say I do know Gruznov.

It doesn't come as a surprise to me that there's matchfixing in a small league like the Estonian, it's all over Europe, still sad news though...

A match between Levadia and Kalev was cancelled due to irregular betting activity at foreign bookmakers (huge bets on Levadia's 3+ goal win)...Estonia's FA apparently got some kind of verbal confirmation as well that something fishy is going on and decided to cancel the kickoff and postpone the match.

And Kalev released two players - Elvis Liivamägi (U21 line up player) and Sander Karu (for me a bit unknown and not so famous)

anyway, it seems unlikely that the players in question would be deemed guilty in court (or at least be punished in any severe way), due to the difficulties in proving the damages (as mostly it was Asian bookmakers who have not officially claimed or proven any damages related to this case).

apparently it's the first time ever when our national prosecutors office is trying to convict somebody for betting-related fraud.

:howler: for some reason this makes me crack up every time - the part where Andy goes out of his way to mention that he's received 20 caps and scored a grand total of ZERO goals!!

there was a whole generation of young forwards who had something like 20-30 caps and 0 or 1 goals at some point...some of them improved and even went to play abroad, some of them had to turn to other means to sustain themselves...
