I saw some stats this morning, about the performances of defenders in Euro 2000.
Most blocks by a defender:
1.Nesta 25
2.Cannavaro 22
3.F.Couto 21

Most clearances by a defender

1.Nesta 43
2.F.Couto 43

It's great to see two Lazio players right up at the top. I expected Nesta to be this good, but F.Couto has been outstanding as well. I think they would form a great partnership in central defence next season.

Well, Italy has dream defence, Nesta, Cannavaro, Iuliano, Toldo...

I love to see Italy defending :>>

Couto did well partly thanks to Portugal! While it's quite the other way round...Italy is doing well partly thanks to Nesta (you can add Cannavaro, Toldo too).
Nedved would shine even more if only Czech Rep. made it to the qf. ;)

Nesta the new Baresi? No! Aim higher! He's capable of it! :)

Nedved not true !!

Couto gives Portugal confidence at the back and when I watch him play lately I feel just as confident then when Nesta guards the back - sometimes Couto makes me feel even more comfortable ?? :)

Anyway I hope Eriksson has watched Euro2000 understands why Miha must go home and Nesta - Couto should form the most solid defence in Serie A.

Yeah, Couto made Portugal defense solid. Actually what I mean by that sentence is that, because other Portuguese performed well too (esp. the midfield) Portugal managed to go quite far and thus we had the chance to see more impressive displays of Couto. But, take out the midfield part and perhaps we wouldn't see Couto up to the sf.
Couto's display in Euro 2000 has been more reassuring. But we still have to keep in mind that he's rather 'card-prone'.

Nesta the new Baresi

Couto is good but not as well as Nesta .
He should be in starting 11,but Eriksson will not place
Miha on the bench.

For me Nesta and Cannavaro have stood out as being truly excellent throughout the tournament with Cannavaro being exceptional in the semi-final. I think it's unfair that some people regard them as not being "classy" defenders.
Like, define the word defender: they do their job, and they do it very well which isn't something I would be as quick to say about the French. Okay, you look at their back four and you think "wow, excellent defence (except Blanc....) but in my opinion they are too attacking, even though they are very good at it, and they forget about their defensive duties(namely Thuram and Lizarazu.) Maybe they will be able to afford to do that against Italy but that depends on how attacking Italy intend to be.

I can't see France getting past the Italian's defence so it's Italy for me this evening.

Well, according to France - Italy match Cannavaro IS the best defender in Euro 2000. He stopped a couple of actions, France made, but Nesta is good aswell, i think they together in Lazio - DREAM DEFENCE

Nesta was the best centre back of Euro 2000 without a doubt :)

In fact he's my player of the tournament :)

How could UEFA choose Thierry Henry as MVP of Euro 2000?
