10.2.04 - Costa Rica and Mexico earned the two CONCACAF Men’s Under-23 berths to the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, after they defeated Honduras and USA, respectively in the Pre-Olympic Tournament Semifinals in front of a crowd of 60,000 at the Estadio Jalisco in Guadalajara, Mexico on Tuesday evening.

Goals by midfielder José Luis López (22nd) and forward Álvaro Saborío (79th) led Costa Rica to 2:0 victory over Honduras in the first semifinal on Tuesday.

This is the ticos first trip to the Olympics since the 1984 Summer Games in Los Angeles (California, USA).

In the other semifinal at the Estadio Jalisco, Mexico continued their 20-game unbeaten streak in CONCACAF U-23 Qualification, after topping the USA 4:0.

The stars & stripes’ loss also ended a streak of 19 consecutive outdoor US Soccer (outdoor) teams that have qualified to a FIFA event.

Forward Rafael Marquez Lugo opened the scoring tricolor in the 26th minute, while defender Diego Martinez increased the lead to 2:0 just two minutes later.

After Marquez Lugo made it 3:0 with his second tally in the 55th minute, midfielder Ismael Iniguez closed out the scoring for Mexico in the 90th minute for the 4:0 final. This is the first berth for the tricolor to the Olympics since the 1996 Summer Games in Atlanta (Georgia, USA).

The 2004 CONCACAF Pre-Olympic Tournament concludes at the Estadio Jalisco on Thursday, 12 February, with Honduras taking on the USA in the third-place game at 17:30, while the Final that has Costa Rica meeting Mexico, is set for 20:00.
