U-20 South American Championship Preview: Hexagonal Round Match
Day 1
Argentina vs. Paraguay
Puerto Ordaz, 16:00 (local time)
Argentina and Paraguay inaugurate the hexagonal round of the U-20 South American Championship on Saturday, with a number of injury set-backs for both sides.
Sergio Batista's Argentina squad struggled to find consistency in the group stage, and unless they improve a great deal they will find life extremely difficult against the solid Paraguayans.
"Paraguay are always difficult rivals. They count with tall players who are also very strong. But we have a team who are capable of making things difficult for them as well, and we will look for our first three points," said Batista.
Argentina will be unable to count with the services of Fernando Meza and Ivan Bella for the game, as both players are suspended. They are likely to be replaced by Federico Fernandez and Exequiel Benavidez, respectively.
Meanwhile, Paraguay will be without Luis Paez, who suffered a serious injury against Chile that could keep him out for the rest of the tournament. He will be replaced by Federico Santander, who scored twice in the vital 2-1 victory over Chile.
The last time both teams met was in the 2007 version of the tournament. Argentina won the match 1-0 in Asuncion.
Uruguay vs. Brazil
Puerto Ordaz, 17:45 (local time)
Brazil will be looking for sweet revenge after Uruguay edged them 3-2 in a thrilling first round encounter on Wednesday. The victory was Uruguay's fourth successive of the competition, and it is no wonder they are in such a confident mood.
The Uruguayans are the leading goal scorers in the competition with 12 goals, and contain a number of the most exciting players in the tournament in their squad.
A confident Uruguay boss, Diego Aguirre, affirmed that his team will look for the three points at all costs.
"Our criteria is to continue winning matches, like we did in the first four matches. We will do our utmost to pick up the three points against Brazil, like we already did last Wednesday," explained Aguirre.
Uruguay are likely to recall Nicola Perez, Maximiliano Calzada, Nicolas Lodeiro, and Santiago 'Morro' Garcia back into the starting XI for the clash. It has yet to be decided whether Jonathan Urretaviscaya and Abel Hernandez (who scored twice against Brazil) will be provided with a place.
The coach of Brazil, Rogerio Lourenco, is likely to count with a full strength squad for the match. He expects his side to move closer towards another championship.
"Everything starts from zero in the final phase. We will face Uruguay again, with the same attitude as in all the other matches, where we will keep fighting to win the title again,"stated Lourenco.
Venezuela vs. Colombia
Puerto Ordaz, 20:00 (local time)
The hosts will meet Colombia again in the closing match of the first round of the hexagonal stage.
In the last clash between them, both sides fought out a 1-1 draw, in which Venezuela goalkeeper Rafael Romo made a dramatic 94th minute penalty save that sent his team through.
Venezuela come into the match in confident mood, despite the absence of star striker Jose Salomon Rondon, who is suspended. Cesar Farias will also be without Francisco Fajardo and Mauricio Parra.
"Despite the absences, we have players who know how to do a good job on the field. We face rivals who we already know," said Farias.
Colombia only managed to reach this stage of the competition with the luck of the draw, to the frustration of Ecuador who bowed out. But head coach, Jose Helmer Silva, believes his side have what it takes to look for the three points against the hosts.
"We are ready to face Venezuela, they are complicated rivals because they are the hosts, but I think we have a good enough team to look for the victory," Silva affirmed.
The Colombians will be without suspended Cruzeiro midfielder Javier Reina. Cristian Mejia is the clear favourite to occupy his position.
