Rifé: “Home grown talent will get its chance in Van Gaal’s squad”

Monday 1 July 2002 09:00 (BCN)

Joaquim Rifé, the club’s Director of development for reserve and youth teams, has been talking exclusively with fcbarcelona.com about the chances for home grown talent in the first team, the World Cup won by Rivaldo and Brazil and the Youth Team’s victory last weekend in the King’s Cup.

The oppotunities are there for home grown talent

“Home grown talent will get its chance in Van Gaal’s squad. They’ll be able to show their quality and adapt themselves to top flight football. Last Friday we agreed with Van Gaal that Víctor Valdés, Andrés Iniesta and Thiago Motta will train with the first team next season. Also, Fernando Navarro, Dani Tortolero, Roberto Trashorras, David Sánchez and Haruna Babangida will join in training as from 10 July and two of them will stay for the whole season. It’s very significant that 5 Barca developed players should be training all week with the first team. It shows that our work with the reserve and youth teams is going well and that the club sees home grown talent as vital to the its present and the future”

Brazil and Rivaldo, World Chapions

“Brazil deserved to win the World Cup. Despite the possession and chances for the Germans you could sense that Brazil could score at any moment. During the championship they’ve been strong in all areas of the game and shown that it’s not enough to play well – you’ve got to fight and work hard. The Brazilians have demonstrated their usual technical skills plus the right attitude, which gave them something extra. And Rivaldo has had a fine championship, playing a vital role in Ronaldo’ two goals.”

15th King’s Cup for the Youth Team

“Against Mallorca, our Youth team showed that when you put together talent and the right attitude, you usually get the right result. We were up against great opposition but we beat them with an outstanding effort. In the dressing room afterwards, I congratulated the lads on the winning the Cup, but more than that, for their attitude. Although Barca B didn’t manage promotion, the progress of our reserve and youth teams this season has been good.”

sorry about the mess up with the two threads being posted with nothing in them. can someone delete the other thread please.

While we are on the topic of home-grown Barca talent Mikel Arteta took part in his first training session @ Rangers yesterday. I look forward to seeing him bring back the title to Rangers :) :proud:
