Gomez rules out immediate return to Colombian hotseat

BOGOTA, July 15 (AFP) --

Hernan Dario Gomez ruled himself out of returning to the post of Colombian national coach here Monday.
Gomez, who was in charge of Colombia at the 1998 World Cup finals where they exited in the first round, has only recently stepped down from the Ecuador hotseat.
He led them to their first ever World Cup finals where they went out at the first hurdle, though it was softened with a win over Croatia.
However Gomez said he believed the best option for Colombia, whose previous coach Francisco Maturana stepped down in January when they failed to qualify for the finals, would be a foreign coach.
While Gomez is keen on Brazilian Paulo Cesar Carpegiani, Colombian Football Federation (FCF) president Alvaro Fina is believed to be opting towards Jaime de la Pava, coach of Colombian champions America de Cali.
Gomez, who was part of Maturana's coaching staff at the 1990 and 1994 World Cup finals, said part of his reason for not wishing to take on the post was his close association with Fina.
"My relations with him is like father and son.
"He has always left doors open for me to return, but he is under a lot of pressure.
"It would not be good if either myself or Maturana were named, because the press would be up in arms over it," he added.
Maturana has been coach of Colombia twice.
The 52-year-old's first spell included two World Cup finals, 1990 and the ill-fated 1994 championship which led to the murder of defender Andres Escobar following their first round exit when they were heavily favoured to go all the way.
He returned for the 2002 World Cup qualifiers but despite leading them to the 2001 Copa America trophy he was unable to get them to the finals of football's showpiece event, the former dentist thought it wiser to move on to coach Saudi Arabian outfit Al-Hilal when his contract ended last January.

July 21st ..........

COLOMBIA

Santa Fe lead the Clausura championship with a maximum nine points from three games after a 2-1 win away to Atletico Huila.

Francisco Serrano gave them first minute lead with a spectacular striker from outside the penalty area and Lucas Jaramillo produced the second goal shortly before halftime.

Rogerio da Silva pulled a goal back for Huila early in the second half.

America, winners of the Apertura championship held in the first half of the season, scrambled a last minute win at home to Quindio when full-back Jersson Gonzalez scored from a penalty awarded for handball.

Meanwhile, Atletico Nacional and Medellin played out a goalless draw in their Medellin derby.
