Three fans of Colo Colo have become the first people jailed in Chile under a law designed to punish violence at sports stadiums.

In the most serious offence, Sandor Voicin was sentenced to five years in prison on charges of attempted murder after stabbing another Colo Colo fan during fighting between rival factions of the team's hard core supporters known as the Garra Blanca.

With the fighting captured by closed circuit television cameras, Voicin’s gielfriend Caroline Mitzie, and another man, Manuel Saavedra, received 600 and 541 days for their part in the brawl.

The law, aimed at stemming increasing vandalism mainly from fans of the country's most popular football teams Colo Colo and Universidad de Chile, was passed in the mid-1990s.

Saavedra, leader of one of the Garra Blanca factions, had been in trouble with the Chilean police previously and was also jailed for several days in the neighbouring Argentine city of Mendoza after acts of violence with other Colo Colo fans.
