22.1.04 - Club América defeated visiting Atlas CF 2:1 on Wednesday evening, at the Estadio Azteca in Ciudad de México, in the first-leg of the 2004 Prelibertadores Playoff that will qualify the second Mexican club to the 2004 Copa Libertadores.

Club Santos Laguna has earned the first Mexican berth into the CONMEBOL’s event after winning the eight-team Prelibertadores tournament this month. Santos Laguna will participate in Group 3 in Copa Libertadores along with Cruzeiro of Brazil, Universidad de Concepcion of Chile and Caracas FC of Venezuela.

Carlos María Morales opened the scoring for Atlas in the 16th minute, but Jesús Mendoza got the equalizer (1:1) for Club América at the 42nd minute-mark. Cuahutémoc Blanco scored the game-winner for Club América with a minute remaining in the match for the 2:1 final.

The second-leg of the Prelibertadores Playoff will take place at Atlas’ home venue of the Estadio Jalisco in Guadalajara, Mexico on 28 January.

The winner will earn Mexico’s second berth into the Copa Libertadores and will compete in Group 1 along with Sao Caetano (BRA), The Strongest (BOL) and Penarol (URU).
