Protesting fans for match to be abandoned

BUENOS AIRES, April 17 (Reuters) - Independiente supporters, protesting at their own team's dismal performance, caused an Argentine league match to be abondoned on Tuesday while the night's other game was called off because of torrential rain.
The referee abandoned Independiente's match at home to Huracan in the 59th minute after missiles rained down on to the pitch. The visitors were leading 4-0 at the time, all of their goals having come in the first half.

'The Independiente supporters kept on throwing things, the police waited a few minutes but I was afraid something would happen,' said referee Sergio Pezzota.

Independiente, who have won the South American Libertadores Cup a record seven times and are one of only three clubs never to have been relegated from the first division, are languishing in 19th place in the 20-team table.

They were playing their second match under new coach Americo Gallego, who played for Argentina in the 1978 and 1982 World Cups, after he stepped in following Nestor Clausen's resignation at the start of this month.

Gallego's first game in charge at the weekend produced a goalless draw away to Talleres.

Daniel Montenegro set Huracan on their way in the fourth minute and was on target again on the stroke of halftime with Luis Gonzalez and Fernando Moner scoring in between.

San Lorenzo's match at home to Argentinos Juniors was interrupted in the 48th minute because of a waterlogged pitch.

The visitors were winning 1-0 through a Daniel Cordone penalty. The Argentine Football Assocation (AFA) said the remaining 42 minutes would be played on April 24.
