I remember a couple of years ago claiming that Woodgate is a better defender than Puyol. Ferdinand certainly is, as is Woodgate. Puyol is a category B defender, however he is still very good at his peak nevertheless.

I remember you claiming a lot of things in the last years.
5 % were true, all other predictions went totally wrong :D

New day, new game, anything can happen.
We can win the CL; 2 or 3 good games for the rest of the campaign and it can happen.
I don't think so. I don't think a good game will beat this United, I think either we will have to be special (not happening) or they will have to suck (not happening either, they are hungry for this trophy).

No one thought Milan could beat Man U last year so who knows? An in form Zambrotta can stop Ronaldo, especially with help from his midfield, but Zambrotta is neither in form... nor does his midfield really help him :)

That reminds me, I LOLed alot when some poster called Sorcerer were comparing Barca 2006 to Man Us now players individually, that he judged Puyol as good as Rio.

Quite funny, though I like Puyol, he is not much of a competent defender in overall, just a sympathetic hardworker who is very very error prone and is good at best however you see it.
Some interestingly oppurtunistic posts. Rememeber a few years ago when the roles were, so to speak, reversed.

Puyol at his best is undoubtedly a world class defender.
Rio is among the best if not the best, but generally the quality of defenders has decreased.

If everything is in the right place, Manchester Utd will beat us. But the CL, in its 2 leg games format, opens a space for surprise. Barcelona hardly have a good game lately, but sometimes you just need a bit of luck.

I have no doubts that Manchester Utd are the best team, independently of who's the winner of the semis, but not always the best wins, fortunatelly for us...

Actually allways liked Puyol, but he has never ever proved to me he is anywhere near a great defender, not even close. Extremely hardworking who limits his shortcomings with effort, but is very error prone to be anywhere near top class defender. He would shine more as RB then CB, because the standard to defend is harder centrally, and he just doesnt cut it. Plays with little brains and talent, but alot of effort.

AND NO, it has little if anything to do with the fact he is having his worst season to date. Gallas is having a crap season to of being schooled of too many players, and I wouldnt dream to say this of him.

What a ridiculously absurd comment. So he plays with so little brains and talent and yet is capable of producing the results we've seen in the last 5 years. Is this revenge for the whole Cannamalo fiasco? :pp

Gallas has also deteriorated. As have many other defenders, which was what I was aiming at.

Sympathetic hardworker? What, like Mother Teresa? I know he has long hair but...

Rio was also error prone a few years ago. In fact some of the comedy he came up with trumps anything that's ever happened to Puyol. The 'best among the world' changes with time, Puyol isn't living in his best moments. Rio is having a fantastic season.

The Puyol who made C.Ronaldo switch flanks in that Euro group clash (although Raul Bravo playing left back might have had it's share to do with it) was every bit as good as Rio is now. He tackled the will to live out of his opponents.

Some of them are better than Puyol yes but purely as central defenders. Puyol can fill in any of the back four positions without a discernable drop in quality. In his best days, he has played it all with admirable gusto. Off the top of my head, only Gallas can claim as such at the highest level (discounting Maldini who is obviously on another level). So he gets points for versatility. When he's in form, he's amongst the best defenders in the world.

He is good, he has few occasions of hitting top class form, but in general Puyol in his career has been too error prone to be a defensive rock (he does indeed play with little brains, he goes into situation aggressively no matter the sitaution, and deals with the loss of position and mistake in after thought) by any standards or comparable to the best in the bussiness. He has mainly been gun-ho hardworking versatile and good defender, who never got to the top level enough in consistency to get any of those kind of accolades. Except being the captain and heart of one of the biggiest clubs in the world.

Not so much for his quality itself, has seen him do blunders or be found out way too often (it looks better then the mistakes they are because he works hard to defend, but still make errors) for him to be considered in the level someone like Rio or Gallas is considered.
