UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE 2015/2016

PLAY-OFF
Second Leg

Arena Khimki, Moscow (RUS)
26 August 2015, 20:45 CET

Ref: Pavel Kralovec (CZE)

x

CSKA Moscow (RUS) 3-1 SPORTING CP - [4-3 on agg.]
(Doumbia 49', 72', Musa 85'; Teo Gutiérrez 36')

**********************

This one is nothing less than a final. If we win, we'll have a big boost for the rest of a season that is just starting and on which we have so many hopes. If we don't, many things will have to be reconsidered.

JJ's European record is not as bad as his former lovers (now haters) like to proclaim but he does have the tendency to change (too) many things when facing tough opposition in away games. I hope he won't do it this time. The team may be tired, our attacking game may not be as fluid as we could wish (in spite of the very early stage in the season) but if everybody performs at their top level we know we are better than them.

Jefferson stayed in Lisbon with a thigh injury and Jonathan Silva is expected to replace him as LB. That will most probably be the only change from the team that beat CSKA 2-1 in Alvalade in the first leg.

Let's hope for a neutral ref and let's win this shit! :fero:

Here's the group of players called by Jorge Jesus for tonight's match in Moscow:

Goalkeepers:
1 Rui Patrício, 22 Marcelo Boeck and 26 Azbe Jug;

Defenders:
21 João Pereira, 47 Ricardo Esgaio, 44 Naldo, 15 Paulo Oliveira, 55 Tobias Figueiredo and 3 Jonathan Silva;

Midfielders:
30 Bruno Paulista, 6 Aquilani, 28 André Martins, 23 Adrien and 17 João Mário;

Forwards and Wingers:
18 Carrillo, 60 Gelson Martins, 36 Carlos Mané, 20 Bryan Ruiz, 10 Fredy Montero, 9 Islam Slimani, 19 Teo Gutiérrez and 8 Tanaka.

FORÇA SPORTING!!!

JJ did change. We'll be playing a more defensive midfield which can be a good thing. We'll see.

A very intelligent and mature first half by Sporting managing to have more ball but never exposing its back line too much to the poisonous counters of the Russians. It's true that we didn't create much danger upfront but neither did CSKA.

The goal came from a great pass and a great finish, in fact by the only player, Teo, that I felt was not defending as he should. Slimani works his socks off and I could see him doing that job very well in this game but, and this is a huge but, his finishing is not as accurate as Teo's and maybe that's why Jesus opted to play the Colombian.

In any case this result will force the Russians to attack much more than they did in this first half and that will open spaces in their not very quick defence. Let's keep it up!

1-1 by Doumbia at 49' after Adrien doing a very soft interception in side the box after a free-kick. In the replay it looks like Doumbia scored with his arm.

It's clear that their goal was scored with the arm. Unbelievable.

At 72' CSKA makes 2-1 through Doumbia after a quick break led by Musa. This time the goal was legit. All equal in the tie now.

At 83' Slimani scores but the goal is disallowed. Apparently the ball made an arch neyond the goal line after the corner but it's not clear if that really happened.

Now to make things perfect João Mário is sent off for fouling Musa still in the Russian half.

A very poor second half from Sporting that seemed shell shocked with that early equalizer, which was a very soft goal to concede and on top of it a goal scored with an arm.

We didn't control the game as we did in the first half and conceded two goals thanks to the speed and also the quality of the two African forwards of CSKA.

Jesus could have made more changes earlier? Yes, I think he should. Bryan Ruiz was dead and Mané could have perfectly replaced him, but perhaps JJ wasn't expecting that 3rd goal before the 90' and was waiting for ET.

We even scored that magic goal that could have given us CL football but funny enough, after two clear penalties not given to us in the first leg and an illegal goal in the second, this time the 6 or 7 refs saw something wrong. After what happened last year against Schalke it's a bit difficult to see all this as just coincidences.

Let's see what this elimination will mean for the rest of this transfer window.
