Chief Loves A Challenge

United's Lucas Radebe is itching for another shot in Eddie Gray's side, although he admits it will take a huge effort to break up the Matteo-Caldwell centre-half partnership.

The South African defender, in the last few months of his contract at Elland Road, would love to make more appearances before the end of the season, if indeed they are to prove his last for the club.

Although brief talks about a contract extension have taken place, in the current climate nothing is guaranteed and Lucas can count himself desperately unlucky again that he suffered another injury that robbed him of his place in the first team.

Radebe had been at the heart of a mini-revival when Gray first took over as caretaker manager and led Leeds on a five match unbeaten run. Lucas suffered a torn hamstring against Manchester City, they came back to equalise with United's talisman off the pitch, and The Whites then lost a succession of games.

It's no wonder Gray is delighted to have him back fit again, even if he hasn't yet managed to force his way back into the team.

"It's good to be back again, and again, and again," he said managing to smile about his injury history.

"It's been frustrating not being able to play a part, I've been in and out this season and it's been tough

"You have to be very patient as well to make sure you come back stronger. Coming back is like breath of fresh air and it's great to enjoy training and be a part of things again."

The 34-year-old has had to sit and watch his replacement, 10-year's his junior, establish himself alongside Matteo in a partnership that has done well for United - which in typical style he is more than happy about.

"Steve has done very well since he came in," said The Chief.

"He's made a good start and he and Dominic are working well together.

"I see it is another challenge. It's good for the club, particularly given the position we're in, and that's what it's all about."

It's good to have Radabe back... This will make the defenders work harder, and this is something that we desperatly need.
