ZAGREB, Croatia, June 26 (DSA) -

Ivan Katalinic, coach of Croatian actual champions Zagreb, has not doubts to eliminate Hungarian side Zalaegerszeg in a second round of qualifications for Champions League.

CL 1st Qualifying Rd Wrap: Skonto, Pyunik And Torpedo Kutaisi All Win Big
News Archive

07/17/2002. Latvian champions FC Skonto registered the most impressive win on a busy, goal-rich day of UEFA Champions League first qualifying round first-leg action, as they virtually assured that next week's return-leg will just be a formality with a 5-0 thrashing of Welsh side Barry Town AFC. Five of the host's players got on the scoresheet at the Skonto stadium in a match which Barry's Simon Rayner will soon want to forget. The Canadian goalkeeper suffered the indignity of being beaten from the halfway line by Mihails Zemlinskis, and committed several other blunders during the course of the evening.

FC Torpedo Kutaisi also managed to hit five on Wednesday in a overwhelming 5-2 home victory over B36 Tórshavn, which almost certainly sets the Georgian side up for an intriguing second qualifying round matchup against AC Sparta Praha. The outstanding Malkhaz Asatiani was the player of the game for the hosts, and that not just because he managed to bag a brace.

A crucial away goal by substitute Slavco Georgievski salvaged a 1-1 draw for Macedonian champions FK Vardar against Luxembourg's Dudelange and put them in an enviable position for the second-leg. FC Pyunik's position going into the return-leg is downright priceless, in the meanwhile, as the Armenians registered a staggering 4-0 victory away to Finland's Tampere United.

Elsewhere on Wednesday, Vaja Tarknishvili's 87th-minute penalty conversion gave Moldova's FC Sheriff Tiraspol a 2-1 come-from-behind victory against Kazakhstan's first-ever representative in Europe's elite club tournament FC Zhenis Astana, while Albanian side KS Dinamo Tirana did even better to come back from a two goal defecit to beat Lithuania's FBK Kaunas 3-2.

Republic of Ireland champions Shelbourne FC will fancy their chances in a week's time, as Jim Gannon's second-half strike earned them an encouraging 2-2 draw in Malta against Hibernians.

Guvo's brace powered FC. Zeljeznicar to their first-ever Champions League victory at the expense of ÍA Akranes, who have a daunting 3-0 deficit to make up in the return-leg in Iceland.

Finally, Northern Ireland's Portadown FC were involved in one of the two scoreless encounter of the day, that being a 0-0 draw at home to FC Belshina Bobruisk of Belarus, while Estonian contenders FC Flora and Cypriot side APOEL Nicosia FC also failed to find a goal between them in Tallinn.

Torpedo Kutaisi (Geo) Torsha(Far) 5-2
Skonto Riga (Lat) Barry Town (Wal) 5-0
Tampere United (Fin) Pyunik Yerevan (Arm) 0-4
Kaunas (Lit) Dinamo Tirana (Alb) 2-3

CL 1st Qualifying Rd Wrap: Portadown, Barry And Shelbourne All Bow Out
News Archive

07/24/2002. It was a miserable day for the Brits as Portadown, Barry and Shelbourne all saw their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League ended after second-leg defeats

Having drawn 2-2 against Malta's Hibernians in the first-leg, Shelbourne would have fancied their chances in the home leg but a 90th minute strike from Chukunyere saw their hopes cruelly dashed.

Portadown were eliminated after a 3-2 defeat to Belsh. Bobruisk. Korolik netted two for the Berlarussian side.

Having been thrashed 5-0 by Skonto Riga in the first leg, Barry emerged with some credit after a 1-0 home defeat restricted the aggregate score to 6-0. Kolesnicenko was the man on target in the 51st minute.

Things were also comfortable for FC Torpedo Kutaisi after their 5-2 first-leg win over B36 Tórshavn. They won the return 1-0 courtesy of a 77th minute strike from Janashia.

Macedonian champions Vardar Skopje made it through to the next round after a comfortable 3-0 win against Luxembourg's Dudelange. Having salvaged a 1-1 draw in the first-leg, Vardar Skopje progressed thanks to goals from in the last 20 minutes from Spasovski (2) and Petkov.

It was a far from comfortable route through for Apoel Nicosia as a Georgiu goal gave them a 1-0 aggregate win over Estonia's Flora Tallinn.

Elsewhere, Moldovan side Sheriff Tiraspol squeezed past Zhenis Astana on the away goals rule despite a 3-2 defeat, Dinamo Tirana edged out Kaunas 3-2 on aggregate after a 0-0 draw, Zeljeznicar eased past Akranes after a 1-0 win gave them a 4-0 aggregate triumph, and finally Tampere United were bundled out 6-0 on aggregate by Armenian side Pyunik Yerevan after a 2-0 defeat.

Champions League Wrap: Goal Machines Bruges, Sparta & Dynamo Kiev Roll Towards Next Round
Club Bruges - Dinamo Bucarest Latest News | | News Archive

A pic from Zilina-Basel: it's a long way from Real Madrid-Leverkusen (AP)
07/31/2002. Europe got itself a shower of Champions League goals to wake up from a sleepy summer which has failed to be spiced up by the equally sleepy transfer market. Tonight the CL's Second Round first legs were played across the Continent, with no acts of giant-killing to be reported.

FC Bruges had a tough time against Romania's Dinamo Bucharest in the night's most appealing match. Home side coach Trond Sollied stuck to his trademark 4-3-3 formation despite mounting criticism from inside the club and the media, and it helped Bruges to another highly entertaining display with the usual high rate of mistakes in front of the goal.

The Belgian runners-up were clearly the better side but were stunned by Dinamo's only real chance shortly before the break, when Alexa equalized. Rune Lange had previously opened his CL account with a close-range tap-in. Bruges immediately turned things round thanks to a fine header by Andres Mendoza, who was finally rewarded for his efforts with a goal. Powerhouse striker Mendoza doubled his tally with five minutes on the clock to put Bruges in a good position before the trip to Romania.

The Champions League has 'heartbreak' written all over it for last year's surprise champions of Sweden Hammarby. The centennial Stockholm club conceded a home draw against Partizan Belgrade, who now contemplate a glamorous third round tie with Bayern Munich. Fred Winsnes put Hammarby in the lead, which was later cancelled by Lazovic eight minutes before half time.

Former Spurs manager Christoph Gross showed again he knows how to manage FC Basel after leading the Swiss champions to a 1-1 draw against Slovakian outfit Zilina. Basel withheld the pressure Zilina put on the match to keep chances open for a heated match in St Jakobspark next week.

Sparta Prague moved closer to a crunch encounter with Belgian champions Racing Genk as they stylishly defeated Torpedo Kutaisi of Georgia. Miroslav Baranek was the night's hero as he scored twice to help Sparta to a large 3-0 win. It was Baranek's first game for Sparta since moving back from FC Cologne. Former Man U & Lazio winger Karel Poborsky also played but appeared somewhat out of steam.

Maccabi Haifa have also all but booked their ticket to the next round after crushing Belishna Bobruisk 4-0. The match was played in Nicosia due to the unstable political situation in Israel at this time. Maccabi should face Sturm Graz in the next round.

In the night's other games, Dynamo Kiev thumped FC Pyunik of Armenia 4-0, a win which failed to enthral coach Mikhailichenko. Skonto Riga and Levski failed to entertain the crowd as they fought to a goal-less draw.
