He went off injured in the 21st minute of the Scottish FA Cup where Caniggia's team Rangers are coming up against Celtic. It's a knee injury but there is no immediate news on the seriousness of the injury. Hope it's not too serious!!

Caniggia's World Cup hopes endangered by Cup exit

Here is a article that has just been published on Caniggia's injury. This article is coutesy of AFP.

GLASGOW, May 4 (AFP) - Veteran Argentina forward Claudio Caniggia's chances of playing in this summer's World Cup appeared to suffer a setback when he went off injured in the Scottish Cup final on Saturday.

Rangers striker Caniggia was obstructed by Celtic's Johan Mjallby in the 19th minute and appeared to fall awkwardly at Hampden Park.

Reports said Caniggia had aggravated an existing knee injury. While Caniggia was receiving treatment Celtic took the lead through John Hartson before the Rangers substitute Shota Arveladze could come on.

Doesnt look good, knee injuries are hard to repair.....

If any good can come of this, surely Saviola now has a greater chance of getting into the squad.

I seen him walking about and joining in our celebrations after winning one of the best Scottish cup final ever. The news here is that he might recover for the WC but it will be very close. I really hope he does make it though as he still has so much to give.

Well, whether he recovers or not,at least everyone here is now acquainted with the name Mjallby - and "how" he will go about his job for Sweden. It should be interesting on any corner-kicks,if Walter Samuel & Johan meet up in the box - black eyes all round methinks:D.

Oh God, no another injury, this is Caniggia's last chance, i hope he recovers on time, he could be very useful coming up in the second half, terrible blow. i'm shure the Celtic player didn't mean to hurt him, anyway, Samuel could take care of ANYBODY.

This might be Saviola's chance if Cani doens't recover on time, please, 'Eck RFC, feel free to update us on the Caniggia issue. and congrats on winning the cup.

I'll make sure I keep you all up to date with Caniggia's injury that won't be a problem.
Did anyone see what happened? If not I will explain as it was not really a bad tackle. Caniggia was on one of his runs and the Celtic player went in for a shoulder tackle and knocked Cani over, it was one of they ones you wonder how he got injured. Anyway as I said before he was celebrating afterwards and walked up a set of stairs to hold the trophy.
I hope you do get a chance to see the game as it was a great advert for the Scottish game simply the best final in over 100 years.

Caniggia's comeback dream over

GLASGOW (Reuters) - Veteran Argentine striker Claudio Caniggia looks certain to miss the World Cup finals after suffering knee ligament damage playing in the Scottish Cup final for Rangers against Celtic.

The 35-year-old's fairytale return to the big time was cut short following a tackle with Celtic's Alan Thompson after 22 minutes of the match, which Rangers went on to win 3-2.

Caniggia, who shot to international fame in the 1990 World Cup, won his 50th cap in a friendly against Cameroon in March - only his second game in six years after missing out on the 1998 World Cup.

He seemed set be included in the World Cup squad but seems out of contention after suffering medial ligament damage in the incident.

'It is a crying shame that someone of his talent will not be at the World Cup,' Rangers manager Alex McLeish said.

Updated reports suggest Caniggia could be back in full training within 3 weeks and If this is the case Biesla will most likely select him for the WC.

Caniggia is now in Italy where he is visiting a top specialist. We should have a final verdict on his physical state by tomorrow

Just heard that Caniggia will have to wait up to 2 weeks before he can really find out if he will make it in time to play in the WC.
Great news thought that he will be there anyway.

We are optimistic of his recovery and in the next hours Cani will be added to the rest of the players, in Italy

Caniggia has begun his treatment and should be in full training within 3 weeks. Tomorrow our NT Doctor will personally examine him Rome but it looks very likely that he'll keep his place on the squad and go to the WC.

How can Bielsa chhose an injured 35 year old uncle who was banned for cocaine use a few years ago and has played 24 matches and scored 4 goals I just can`t understand that it doesn`t make sense...

When he has a player that is so talented that I have seen few like him...

Everything is clear to me now France brought their new young star Cissè that has the same age as Saviola and he will make the difference for France...Believe me...You will regret it.

Argentina if they now finally choose to exclude him they will not make it all the way I think he is the player that will make the difference but it`s your loss...and mine as well I really really wanted to see him cause he is so great he has moved to a new country a new team his father has died but still he has assisted lots of goals never been injured and even scored 20 goals 4 of them in the champions league...

Bielsa is a loser...you will see...saviola is the future if there is no room for him among the 23 then there is no room for glory...

But good luck anyway...I still love your NT...:D

C'mon Bielsa is not a loser, he walked over in the WCQ matches, i can understand your frustration over Saviola not being included, but he's young he'll have other chances, and the 35 year old uncle, is very motivated, and inspired...

You'll see....

I hope you are right every player going to the world cup should be very motivated but what do you think Saviola will think he has had a marvellous season but is still not selected...

What does he have to do ??

"If you are good enought you are old enought"

Sven-goran Eriksson the coach of England a very very goos quote...

But honestly bring an injured player instead of..........AAAAJJHHHHH

I`am so sad

Cheers:dontcare:
