Canada also won without some of its best players. Four England-based players were missing, including Everton forward Tomasz Radzinski. Canadian goalkeeper Craig Forrest, the 2000 Gold Cup MVP, is also out, recovering from testicular cancer.

Kevin McKenna scored both goals for Canada, showing why he was the first Canadian in the German Bundesliga. McKenna just moved to Scotland's Heart of Midlothian after three years with Energie Cottbus.

A third Canadian goal, by Davide Xausa in the 54th minute, was disallowed because of an offside call.

Despite a largely inexperienced group of players, the Canadians were more organized than Haiti, which has made strides under Argentine coach Jorge Castelli. The Haitian fans cheered every time their team crossed midfield, but Castelli's team got only one good chance from Frantz Gilles in the third minute.

Haiti's next game -- Sunday against World Cup qualifier Ecuador -- should be even tougher.
