Do or die match for Brescia, who are desperately fighting for the save.
One week after having suffered a huge disappointment, the Rondinelle have no alternatives to the three points in their home match against already relegated Fiorentina
Last Sunday, Mazzone's men went close to the most important result of their season, but Ronaldo's late double prevented them from grabbing an unpredictable win in San Siro against league leaders Inter. The hosts are currently tied at 34 points with Udinese, and most likely the fourth relegated team will be one of these two sides.
Just like the Friulani, who will face Venezia, Brescia shouldn't have big worries in accomplishing their task. Fiorentina have nothing left to play for and their main worry at the moment is planning next season's attempt to conquer one of the top four positions in the Serie B.
TEAM NEWS
-Brescia: the hosts could be boosted by the recovery of their brightest star. Skipper Roberto Baggio could be available only 77 days after his bad ligament injury, although he won't certainly be in the starting eleven. All of Mazzone's players are healthy, and the veteran coach will also welcome back influential midfielder AnTonio Filippini, who missed last week's match against Inter due to a suspension.
Starting line-up (4-4-2): Castellazzi; Bonera, Petruzzi, Mangone, Sussi; Binotto, A.Filippini, Guardiola, Bachini; Toni, Tare
Bench: Srnicek, Calori, Yllana, Giunti, E.Filippini, R.Baggio, Caracciolo
Injured: none
Suspended: none
Cautioned (one more yellow card to be suspended): Sussi
-------------------------------
-Fiorentina: coach Bianchi will exploit these last matches of the season in order to test some youngsters, who could be useful in next season's attempt to climb back in the Serie A. Most likely, Palombo and Agostini will play from the starting whistle, while Chiesa, Morfeo, Nuno Gomes, Vanoli, Cois and Baronio will be sidelined with various injuries.
Starting line-up (3-5-2): Taglialatela; Adani, Torricelli, Moretti; Di Livio, Amaral, Amoroso, Palombo, Agostini; Adriano, Mijatovic
Bench: Manninger, Ceccarelli, Pierini, Rossitto, M.Rossi, Ganz, Gonzalez.
Injured: Chiesa, Morfeo, Nuno Gomes, Vanoli, Cois, Baronio
Suspended: none
Cautioned (one more yellow card to be suspended): Morfeo, Vanoli, Nuno Gomes, Pierini
FORM GUIDE & NUMBERS
-Brescia last 6 matches: WDWLDL . The undeserved defeat against Inter was only the second in the last eleven contests for the Rondinelle, who have been showing a good solidity of late.
Overall: 7 W – 13 D – 11 L - Average points per match 1.10 – Goals scored/conceded 37-47
Home: 3 W – 8 D – 4 L – Average points per match 1.13– Goals scored/conceded 22-26
-Remaining matches:
Juventus-Brescia
Brescia-Bologna
Brescia's absolute need to defeat Fiorentina is clear by also taking a look at their last two matches. There is no doubt both Juventus and Bologna will have plenty to play for against the Rondinelle.
Fiorentina last 6 matches: DDLLLL. The straight draws against Udinese and Bologna were Fiorentina's last breath: following those matches, the Viola collapsed, losing four in a row.
Overall: 5 W – 7 D – 19 L - Average points per match 0.71 –Goals scored/conceded 28-56
Away: 2 W – 1 D – 12 L – Average points per match 0.33 – Goals scored/conceded 13-35
-Remaining matches:
Fiorentina-Parma
Perugia-Fiorentina
If Parma and Perugia will need points in order to reach their goals (the save and a spot in the Intertoto Cup respectively), they shouldn't have big worries obtaining them against the Viola.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
-Brescia: Josep Guardiola. The Catalan playmaker is expected to confirm last week's superb outing against Inter. Without his doping-suspension, Brescia would have secured their 'Salvezza' long ago…
-Fiorentina: Daniele Adani. In spite of Fiorentina's awful season, Trapattoni keeps on giving confidence to the former Brescia defender, who played the whole midweek match against Uruguay and will likely fly to Korea and Japan.
SOCCERAGE PREDICTION
I can't see anything besides a home win coming out of this contest. Brescia will join this match after having produced a great performance against Inter and need these three points like water in the desert. Fiorentina have nothing to play for, not even their pride.
Brescia 3 Fiorentina 0
