TEAM NEWS

Manchester United

Diego Forlan is expected to be named on the United bench, just one week after completing his £7.5million transfer from Independiente.

Sir Alex Ferguson, who originally planned to give the 22-year-old Uruguayan striker a few weeks to settle in at Old Trafford, has been impressed by the youngster's form in training.

Ryan Giggs is set to start after being laid low by flu last week, while Ruud van Nistelrooy will also be unleashed after being rested at the weekend. However, David Beckham and Juan Sebastian Veron are struggling with minor injuries and are unlikely to be risked.

Bolton

Gudni Bergsson and Simon Charlton have recovered from groin and calf injuries respectively and are available for selection in the Trotters' defence.

But the versatile Paul Warhurst (calf) joins Per Frandsen and Colin Hendry, both nursing ankle injuries, on the list of players unavailable to boss Sam Allardyce.

Allardyce has vowed to attack the champions in tonight's Sky Live clash. "Their defensive record is usually the best in the division, but this time round it's not so," he said.

"You've got a better chance of scoring a goal against Manchester United than in the last few seasons. We hope we can get at their back four at some stage and, I hope, get a chance to score against them. If we do get a chance we must take it."

From RED11

Bolton play host to Manchester United at Reebok Stadium on Tuesday evening, and hold the advantage on previous meetings between the two. Of the 48 games played, Trotters have recorded 24 wins, and Manchester Utd have come away with 12 victories.

The last time the two teams met at Bolton was just over four years ago, in September 1997, when they played out a goalless draw in a Premiership match.

Recent encounters between the teams:
2001/2002 Sat 20 Oct Man Utd 1 - 2 Bolton PREM
1997/1998 Sat 07 Feb Man Utd 1 - 1 Bolton PREM
1997/1998 Sat 20 Sep Bolton 0-0 Man Utd PREM
1995/1996 Sun 25 Feb Bolton 0 - 6 Man Utd PREM
1995/1996 Sat 16 Sep Man Utd 3 - 0 Bolton PREM
1990/1991 Sat 26 Jan Man Utd 1 - 0 Bolton FAC
1979/1980 Mon 07 Apr Bolton 1 - 3 Man Utd DIV1

Recent respective form guides:

Bolton Wanderers may have lost only 1 of their last six home games, but the other 5 have resulted in drawn games. While Trotters have scored 6, a worringly large 9 have been leaked at the other end.

Manchester Utd's away form is none too clever either, with a marvellous return of five wins and one defeat from the last six. The games have constituted a decent return of 13 goals for the Red Devils, and 5 goals against.

Bolton are hovering perilously just above the relegation zone, with 25 points from 23 matches. Man Utd are currently sitting proudly at the top of the entire league, having collected 45 points from the 24 games played.

Sequence statistics:

Bolton Drawn last 2 games at home.
Failed to win in previous 8 home matches.
Unbeaten run of 5 matches.

Manchester Utd 5 successive away victories.
12 games since last away draw.
Last drawn game 17 outings ago.

A must win game?

Will it's always tricky & bit OTT to class a league match in January as a "Must Win Match" but i feel our recent form & 7 league defeats to our name does lean towards making this match a "Must Win Game"!

Kick off in just 3 hours time & i is getting bloody excited! :D

Love to see Forlan come on & SCORE & help us win!!!! :eekani: :)

A superb performance, the best this seasoin ,IMO:)

The first half started off with Bolton, urged on by the home fans, puttting some pressure on our defense as Ricketts and Bobic both created some problem. But after we saw off the initial wave of Bolton attack,it was all UTD thereafter.:)The first goal came in the 15th minute as Ruud did well to open up Giggs down the left flank, who rushed down the flank and passed the ball to Ole who took a brilliant first touch before coolly slotting the ball Jaisskalainen. After that we continued to put pressure on the Bolton defense as Keano had his shot parried by the GK and the rebound nearly fell to Ruud.Scholes also had a couple of shots but the second goal from a Beckham corner which Ole did brilliantly to head on target. He nearly broke his neck trying to twist it so hard:D:DRight at the stroke of half-time,Barthez made a wonderful save from Ricketts from point blank range and I feel that was the turning point of the game.

In the second half,Giggsy nearly made it 3-0 after only 12 seconds:eek: but his shot hit the post and Beckham's follow-up went over the bar. However, the third goal was not long in coming and when it came, the match was virtually over as a contest. The ref awarded us a freekick on the left flank and Becks accurately picked out Ole from the setpiece who coolly headed the ball inside the near post to get the well deserved hattrick. After that Blanc,Keane and Ole were taken off for some deserved rest and on came O'Shea,Butt and Forlan.Ruud got his now customary goal;) in the last few minutes to cap off what had been a pretty frustrating day for him.Again the gaol camme from a quick counter attack as the Bolton defense's lack of pace was crudely demonstrated tonight.:)

Overall,a superb performance and just what we needed after the two consecutive defeats. The lads looked charged up for this game and also there was a certain fluidity in our passing which wasnt thre before. It was just magnificent to see the team play tonight.:):proud:

My ratings:

Barthez-8.5(didnt have to do much but when called into acton made a couple of brilliant saves)
Phil-7.5(was solid today.Helped out the attack pretty often and hopefully the injury is not serious)
Blanc-8.5(Very good performance tonight.Nearly won every header against that giant Ricketts and was looking very solid tonight)
Gaz-7.5(He has been consistent the last few games and tonight wasnt any different.Just did his job)
Micke-8(Impressive tonight, both defensively and going forward)
Beckham-8(two assists in the game also some good long balls. Was more effective from set plays than open play tonight.)
Keane-8(As usual did his job.Ran all over the park and also took a couple of shots but should have scored from at least one)
Scholes-7.5(An inconsistent performanc.Sometimes he was back to his usual best while misplacing passes some other time)
Giggs-9(Superb)
Solskjaer-10(got a hattrick.Need I say more;))
Ruud-7.5(Frustrating night for him.Got a goal in the end to make things better:D)
